Archaeologists have unearthed a 2,200 year-old shipwreck in the Mediterranean sea that sank after it was hit by falling blocks as the temple of Amun was destroyed in an earthquake.

The wreck was discovered - along with the remains of a funerary area - underneath the ancient city of Heracleion, which fell into the water after it was destroyed by earthquakes nearly 1,200 years ago.

Experts have noted that the ship, known as a fast galley, is 25 meters (82ft) long and its body was built with a flat keel, something that was common for navigating the Nile River and the Delta.

“The city of Heracleion, home of the temple where Cleopatra was inaugurated, was one of the most important trade centers in the Mediterranean area before it disappeared into what is now the Bay of Aboukir.”

I don’t care what anyone says, Cleopatra was HOT!

And ruthlessly clever. She was still a teenager when she wooed Julius Caesar.

Some notes from the article, that it doesn't even make clear:

2,200 year-old shipwreck or destroyed by earthquakes nearly 1,200 years ago.

and ...

Heracleion was lost around 800AD due to flooding and earthquakes

So there was a 1,000 y.o. ship still floating in the Eastern Med 1,200 years ago? That should be the news here. Mankind can make really durable ships.

Not a single mention in the story about flooding - well, the fact that they were underwater MUST point to man-made global warming.

Well, it is The Daily Mail.

The city of Heracleion, was one of the most important trade centers in the Mediterranean area. Before Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in 331, Thônis-Heracleion was the largest port city in Egypt.

Interesting history, even if written by dunces.

Heh, those may be two different events being described — the destruction of the Temple, then centuries later, the quake that caused the terrain to liquify and slide out into the Med.

The other (more likely) possibility is, the wreck was already there, minding its own business, when 1000 years later, the quake caused the city to fall in on top of it. :^)
