People Are Returning Their Pandemic Chickens
Yahoooooooooo ^ | July 22, 2021 | Jelisa Castrodale

Posted on 07/26/2021 11:23:09 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

At the start of the pandemic, when daring to go to the supermarket meant staring at empty shelves where the dairy products, canned goods, and yeast packets used to be, some people decided that they'd adopt chickens to give themselves a steady supply of fresh eggs, or just to take control of something in their lives.

But now that everything feels slightly different and many of us are inching our way back to normal, those chickens have become just another responsibility—or perhaps a reminder of what life was like twelve-plus months ago. As a result, some people are giving up their backyard birds, which is proving to be stressful for the chickens themselves, and for the organizations that rescue roosters and hens.

According to Block Club Chicago, the Chicago Roo Crew is one of those animal advocacy groups, and they're struggling to pay for veterinary care for the birds they already have. They've been inundated with so many requests to take in abandoned or unwanted chickens that they've had to start turning them down, and referring those people to other organizations. "Right now, currently, we're closed for intake," Julia Magnus, an animal rights attorney and Chicago Roo Crew volunteer, told the outlet. "Because we have too many [birds] and our vet bills are tremendous."

This isn't just happening in Chicago either: Tamerlaine Sanctuary & Preserve in Montague, New Jersey told the West Milford Messenger that they've had to stop taking in new birds after having to accept 20 hens in the past few months. The sanctuary houses around 150 birds, and it might spend as much as $20,000 every year on veterinary care for the chickens.

And it doesn't occur to any of these 'armchair farmers' to eat them? ;)

We are DOOMED as a Society able to feed ourselves.

Also - wouldn’t it make great sense for all no-kill shelters to keep chickens as a matter of course, anyway? Eggs are a great source of protein for dogs and cats that are off their feed due to stress or recovering from injury or illness.

$20K on Vet bills for CHICKENS? Zoykes. I have literally raised HUNDREDS of chickens from chicks to layers and have yet to take a single one to the vet - for anything. WTH are people doing to their chickens? They’re like the easiest, healthiest, self-contained critter there ever was. PLUS - they eat icky BUGS!

Oy! If only there was something you could do with a chicken you didn't need anymore!

As an aside, I have a bird feeder that I keep well stocked. One of the species tha visits most often is the Mourning Dove. Having all that good feed to nosh over the past year has fattened them up nicely. Should the food supply 'round these paarts ever be interrupted, ...

"Other organizations" like KFC or Popeye's.

Certain breeds of meat chickens only take about 12 weeks to reach harvest age/weight.

What a load of chicken shit. We have over a 100 chickens on my farm and I have never spent 1 dime on veterinary care on any of them. This is shameless appeal for people to donate to these “sanctuaries or rescues” places.

My horses and dog are a different matter

“Chop their head off”

Nah, there’s sharp objects involved with that.

Simply grab the chicken by the neck and rotate your arms so the chicken rotates in a clockwise or counterclockwise rotation and the neck twists and snaps as easy as you please...and the chicken is taken care of, without blood pumping all over and a beheaded chicken running around bashing and itself up.

Or if the grip is the opposed overhand, crack it like a whip.

There’s a two handed version for smaller bird and I beleive it’s called crowning.

“Of course, there could be other reasons that people have had to surrender their backyard birds other than “I just don’t want them anymore.” As NPR previously noted, some armchair farmers could’ve learned about local regulations that affect their flock—or specifically prohibit roosters from living within city limits—after they brought the animals home, or the hens that they bought to lay eggs have stopped, you know, doing that.”

This part is what’s really sad you done need a Rooster to make eggs!!!!

The fact that free range chicken eat just about anything they come across amuses me. This include bugs, rocks, egg shells and animal feces. (and anything they happen to see)

There is a commercial that advertises that their free range chickens are best because they don’t eat animal parts or some such. The joke is on them

I've personally watched them eat entire nests of newborn rats.

Another thing just turn them loose. When I used to live there was flock of ‘wild’ chickens down the street from me. Most had gotten loose from their coop and were just running around being chickens. They were making more chickens and lived just fine on their own.

Glad to hear someone else thought Vet bills for chickens was kind a odd!

“My horses and dog are a different matter...”

We buy dog kibble by the PALLET, and our last two vet bills were $2,000 and $500. The mule and steer are on pasture right now, but they both get ‘treats’ which has trained both to, ‘come to the bucket.’ The steer gets sweet oats, and the mule likes a scoop of dog kibble, apples or carrots.

Well, aren’t we all ‘trained to the bucket?’ I’ll follow you anywhere if you have the makings for a Dirty Martini, LOL!
