On July 17, 1996, TWA Flight 800, a Paris-bound 747 out of JFK, blew up off the coast of Long Island. It seemed somehow fitting that James Kallstrom, the public face of the FBI investigation into the plane's destruction, would die two weeks before the 25th anniversary. As a patriot, a Vietnam vet, and an outspoken critic of all things Clinton, Kallstrom once held promise as the insider most likely to come clean. He never did.
As to my own involvement with this story, until the evening of February 23, 2000, I was as naïve as a CNN anchor. Before that evening, I would have dismissed out of hand anyone who dared suggest that elements of the FBI and CIA would conspire with the White House and the New York Times to cover-up the cause of so public a disaster.
February 23, 2000 was the night my education began.
Earlier that evening I had listened with some interest at a Kansas City country club as investigative reporter James Sanders spoke about his inquiry into the 747's fate. At a dinner afterwards, I found myself sitting next to James's wife, Elizabeth. A sweet and soft-spoken woman of Philippine descent, she filled me in on the personal details. At the time of the disaster, she was a trainer for TWA. She had been a flight attendant for some years before that.
Of the 230 people killed on that ill-fated flight, 53 were TWA employees, many of them Elizabeth's friends. At one of the numerous memorial services, Elizabeth introduced James to Terry Stacey, a 747 manager and pilot who was working on the investigation.

Like someone else said, how many other 747s had their fuel tanks explode? Hmmmm?
ZERO! Before or after.
The number of eye witnesses alone makes any other explanation than a missile ridiculous!
The day after it happened I was taking a smoke break on a roof top in Atlanta along with some Dept State, SS and Delta team members, we were discussing 800.
Everyone was sure it was a non-US missile.
No other 747 has had a center tank explosion, but two 737s, a 727 and at least one 707 have. The 737 about five years after flight 800 exploded due to remarkably similar circumstances, yet it happened on the ground. AC unit near center tank running for a long period of time, heating the fuel to above the flash point, and a fault in the wiring which passes through the center tank.
They did, I saw it. It was not an animation, it was an amateur photographer. It clearly showed a fire like gowing towards the aircraft not away. Then it was scrubbed. Never to be seen again. I wish someone would have captured the video...then again they would be foolish to show it knowing this environment.
I don’t believe it was our Navy IMHO.
The CIA created an animation trying to explain the explosion and aftermath which animation showed the airliner CLIMB after the nose came off. What was the CIA doing in this investigation? The animation so defied the laws of physics as to be laughable to any scientist or engineer.
~~~
Why would a climb defy the ‘laws of physics’?
First off, if you severe the front of the aircraft, you are likely taking away all control of the flight surfaces of the aircraft, including those from autopilot? No? I don’t have an schematics handy. You tell me.
Secondly, even if all flight surfaces remained steady at the moment of separation, they would very likely not have nearly the level of aerodynamic augmentation characteristics that all the unpredictability that the irregular breakage point profile would present, let alone the fact that you now either have an open faced cylinder funneling wind at 400 knots, or a closed one cupping the air. So let’s just say that the forward fuselage broke and went down and back, and even if it pulled the rest of the craft downward, there could easily have been a large flap of metal bent downward acting just like leading slats would on a wing.
Third, all other things being equal, if you lose mass from the front of the aircraft, the balance is to the rear, which would cause you to rotate upward
My initial thought was that it was our Navy in a horrible blunder, but the CIA involvement in the coverup increased the likelihood that it was a foreign government/terrorist event.
I still have not heard a coherent scenario of who and why...the coverup has held firm.
For me, once the NTSB was removed as the investigative
agency, the gig was up.
As far as Kahlstrom goes, for me his credibility was shot
early on. I admit to despising the man.
One thing I disagreed with Rush about, was the worth of this
man.
Some people got some pretty fat job changes directly after
the investigation was over.
It’s indeed unfortunate that the people who participated in
this won’t be around to be sent to prison for life, when it
finally does publicly fall apart.
You are naive.
They just murdered the reporter who broke the 1996 Clinton-Lynch tarmac meeting because the rest of the media dutifully stayed quiet about it. Not one peep from anyone.
The Navy personnel involved were probably killed in an accident. We would never know.
Aircraft contrail illuminated at altitude by last vestiges of a sunset?
Remember the hullabaloo a few years back over the "missile" off the west coast? I live near some tall mountains, and I see things that look like rocket blast (think Cape Canaveral smoke trail) coming west over the Sandia Mountains near me. They look vertical, not horizontal due to optics. But they are most certainly aircraft contrails. I see them west of me at night lit up by the sun well after sunset here given their altitude. Sunset off Long Island would have been around 8:25 PM on that date in 1996. The flight exploded at 8:31 PM.
Who, what, why was all speculation and scuttlebutt.
The Olympics were about to start and everyone’s focus and concentration was on potential local carnage plus the Clintonistas were scheduled to come to town.
You may have served, but think about it. How many people on board know where a launched missile is going?
As far as most sailors know, they were on a training excercise at the same time this happened. Not one sailor has said they saw the explosion from their ship.
The eyewitnesses were not looking at contrails over a mountain. They were looking out at a flat ocean where the concept of “up” is pretty clear.
TWA 800 was when I started to wake up
I think it's safe to say that when a ship fires a missile then everyone onboard knows when that happens. The noise and vibration would guarantee that.
As far as most sailors know, they were on a training excercise at the same time this happened.
Again, to believe that the Navy accidentally shot the 747 down you first have to believe that the Navy is so unbelievably stupid as to conduct live fire drills in the middle of one of the most densely populated commercial aircraft routes in the world. Are you really suggesting they're that dumb?
As an exercise, compare the height of the debris from the dropping of the condo buildings in Miami to the height of the debris from the collapse of the WTC two towers. Not a single network will make that comparison on camera because the figures do not add up. The actual rubble pile for towers one and two are less than the debris pile for those twelve story buildings. And don’t try to claim the towers fell into the parking decks below because if that were true the bathtub would have been destroyed and the Hudson River would have inubdated lower Manhattan and ths subway tunnels.
That is true. I was just throwing that out there. I honestly don't think you could keep 200+ sailors quiet, especially at that time (I was in under Clinton's first couple of years, the military's hatred of the man within the ranks was palpable), so I discount our Navy having a hand in it. It was also too high for a MANPAD at the time. On-board bomb? Plausible.
IIRC there was a USN P8 Orion aircraft patrolling the area when TWA800 was shot down. Reasonable questions have never been asked or answered in public.
1) Was presence of Navy surveillance plane common in that area, or was this unusual?
2) Was it participating in any sort of “exercise” at the time?
3) What did it pick up at the time of the incident? Highly precise, timestamped surveillance is part of what this type of aircraft does. Did the FBI or CIA analyze copies of all data from the plane?
4) Were all members of the crew identified and interviewed? Jack Cashill solicits new sources to come forward — the P8 crew would be his best bet, since they were witnesses, not perpetrators. No doubt they have been sworn to secrecy.
5) Did the FBI have any foreknowledge that something might be happening? With many incidents, the FBI was heavily involved all along. Did they arm up some terrorists to heroically catch only to have another booboo?
Tell me again how many eyewitnesses FIRST reported seeing a missile rising to the plane? There is no lie which the federal government call tel to change the truth as first repoprted. The CIA and FBI are professional liars and enemies of we the people.
