On July 17, 1996, TWA Flight 800, a Paris-bound 747 out of JFK, blew up off the coast of Long Island. It seemed somehow fitting that James Kallstrom, the public face of the FBI investigation into the plane's destruction, would die two weeks before the 25th anniversary. As a patriot, a Vietnam vet, and an outspoken critic of all things Clinton, Kallstrom once held promise as the insider most likely to come clean. He never did.
As to my own involvement with this story, until the evening of February 23, 2000, I was as naïve as a CNN anchor. Before that evening, I would have dismissed out of hand anyone who dared suggest that elements of the FBI and CIA would conspire with the White House and the New York Times to cover-up the cause of so public a disaster.
February 23, 2000 was the night my education began.
Earlier that evening I had listened with some interest at a Kansas City country club as investigative reporter James Sanders spoke about his inquiry into the 747's fate. At a dinner afterwards, I found myself sitting next to James's wife, Elizabeth. A sweet and soft-spoken woman of Philippine descent, she filled me in on the personal details. At the time of the disaster, she was a trainer for TWA. She had been a flight attendant for some years before that.
Of the 230 people killed on that ill-fated flight, 53 were TWA employees, many of them Elizabeth's friends. At one of the numerous memorial services, Elizabeth introduced James to Terry Stacey, a 747 manager and pilot who was working on the investigation.

True, a Stinger would target the engines. A radar guided foreign equivalent would go for the center of the radar reflection.
A smallish warhead designed to spread a cloud of shrapnel might not have enough energy to overcome the inertia of the main missile body still being driven forward.
Loads of fuel vapor from the fuel tank rupture in the event could easily cause the equivalent of a fuel-air explosive. Remember our first use of a FAE in Afghanistan? The Brits said ‘Those bloody Yanks just used a nuke!!!!’
I believed the missile theory but the more I see I think Ramsi Youseff had his hand in it...
The three different missile theories I see would be the stinger missile from a terrorist (flight 800 was too high and yes, the stinger would have targeted an engine), the US Navy shot it down with an SM-2 (an absurd theory for reasons several people including myself have mentioned on this thread already) and an advanced missile from a foreign government like the Russians (then why would we cover that up?).
Plus, has anyone come forward with evidence that any parts of the plane blew in and not out? Are there any parts of the plane that sustained damage consistent with a missile hitting it? I am not aware of such evidence if it exists.
The evidence led me to believe it was shot down, but I foolishly believed the cover up was for good reasons.
I do believe the fuel vapor explosion is what blew the aircraft apart.
I don’t believe it was a missile due to lack of evidence. I’m surprised the bomb theory doesn’t get more traction. That seems more plausible to me than what many members of this board believe, which is that the US Navy shot it down and covered it up.
Currently I believe the official explanation. The AC packs located near the center tank were running for over two hours prior to departure, which heated the nearly empty tank to above the fuel’s flash point. The spark was caused by faulty wiring which runs through the tank.
It is a fact that for some reason, Boeing mixed high and low voltage wiring in the same cable bundle. It is also a fact that the pilots discussed a faulty fuel quantity indicator in the center tank.
This to me is much more plausible than the missile theory and cover up. Why cover up for a foreign government or terrorist? If the US Navy, how did they keep all the sailors quiet? That’s implausible.

My education began on Free Republic back in 1999. It was an eye opener for me. That’s when I became ‘woke’.
Missile trails burn out well below 30,000 feet, and small missile (5’ long) make it impossible to see (flat color, no reflectivity—don’t want to make it easy to see while in combat), and the missile is a leading edge tracker and doesn’t have a proximity fuse, and doesn’t have the range to hit a receding target at that altitude (engagement zones are not circular/uniform and max altitude is around 17,000 feet), etc.

I was convinced from the beginning that a missile took that aircraft down.
When Bill Clinton told Cardinal O’Connor, bless his memory, that he would be coming to visit griving families. The Cardinal told him that if he came to where the Cardinal was, he would leave. Cardinal O’Connor could not abide the Clintons. He had to be dead for them to sit in St Patrick’s.

They (multiple witnesses) saw something headed from the ground to the plane, then the plane exploded. Their best explanation was a missile trail. Maybe it was something else. To many saw to ignore. They saw what they saw.
