The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
We tried those gas cartridges last year. She just moved her den from under the barn to the side of the hill nearer to the garden .
I have one, but we are in a cul-de-sac unfortunately. So eighbors o ly 10 orzo feet awY we have to use a quiet tool to rid the critters. Yep woodchuck are very very hard to get. Any little noise or movement and they are gone. I had to put a tarp on our deck railing that I could duck down behind just to get out the door and over to where I could get a chance to see the wiley creature.
We tried havahart traps, but nope, they will not go in. No matter what bait we used
Now I think we have a rat in the garden. My eyes aren’t quite good enough to see them fro a distance though
You might have luck with Tomcat mouse killer. It’s a bag of green chunks and a groundhog just might eat a bunch of it. We use it for too many chipmunks and it works great. No cats anymore and the neighbors cats are getting lazy and don’t come over as much. We gave our have-a-hart trap away years ago, caught one with it many many years ago - not easy. I actually had to enlarge their biggest trap on one end and a female still barely it in.

Correction: March, 2021
Correcting the “correction:” No, it WAS today!
Thank you Diane! I have some nasturtium seeds. Going out now to plant by my cukes and yellow zukini! (Zuks variety are Supposed trainable to climb, seed house named them “Smooth criminal”.) (Climbing yer wall burgling your house etc!)
Thanks ill check that out. I don’t really care to take them alive though, but I would like 5o try everything possible to rid the garden of them. We are inundated with them in our neck of the woods. If I didn’t worry that they had some disease, I’d stew em up, but don’t quite trust that they are clean. I just don’t trust ground dwellers to be disease free much. (Mice, red squirrels, Prarie dogs, not that we have those here, but they are bad for diseases like bubonic plague and others, armadillos, etc, they al. Seem to carry some nasty stuff)
Wow! Thanks for the heads up
Didn’t kill her, eh?
I had the thought of stringing a roll of fly paper across the burrow opening.
I would expect it to stick to their fur and as they tried to get it off, get tangled in it.
But we lived where neighbors would see it and object.
Not now.
But I haven’t seen the critters on our property yet for some reason.
Now watch. I mentioned it and here they come.
No hubby did get her and an offspring a few days ago. Finally rid of her.
But you and metmom know how needed the rain was/is in S. NH. More maybe later today for you all, which is coming down heavy here south of you now. Rain barrels are full though, thanks be to God, but the next 10 days look overall cool, with some above average rain:

That is so terrible! I hope there was no one in that car!
Thank you for posting Daniel! Close to normal for both.
I discovered today that I have 4 pea pods. And some green beans came up. And the tomato plants are a foot high and holding.
HOWEVER - my apple tree finally has apples that stuck around! I didn’t Neem it at all this year, and in spite of that it’s looking better this year than it has in a long time. And I have APPLES - quite a few still, and some are getting a blush! This is Hot Damn time for me, lol. Especially since the whole re-do of the garden has been such a dumb thing this year.
I've got apples exploding:
My pineapple lily fully in bloom (with another offshoot coming up strong):
Beautiful canna lilies that love heat:
Cylamen that hate heat - and are usually done blooming by now:
Figs coming on strong:
And finally:
Happy 4th, everyone. And Happy Gardening!
I've replaced my lone hanging flower basket three times now....lets hope this present one survives....I've got it out of the sun....
I've had to water my garden by hand every single day, in addition to the sprinklers...
despite the dry weather, garden is looking good....have had tons of zucchinis, pulled some nice elephant garlic, plus loose leaf lettuce....onions are finally getting some size, tomatoes are producing but still fruit is young....
cukes, peppers,squash all doing well....
peppers have had to babied but coming along....
thanks be to God we can garden...
Well, we can make an exception for you, Bob, LOL!
Oh, ick, no! Mangy beasts! I’d never willingly feed that many, LOL!
We have two; ‘George Cooney’ and ‘Jennifer Cooniston.’ They have their own cages/condos/runs and we keep them around so the new puppies can smell them to know what they’re hunting for in the future. ;)
They are totally pampered and well cared for, but they are NOT pets by any stretch.
