Several years ago in the Tour, Lance Armstrong caught a brake level on the shoulder strap of a woman’s purse. She was leaning out to take a photo of the peloton as it weent by. It was an accident but he still went down hard. And he broke his frame in the accident.

Was what was written on the sigh cause the crash? If so what did it say? Was it just that a sign caused this?
Everyone keeps repeating "a cardboard sign" but there's no context of why this cardboard sign caused this trouble.
Can anyone explain what actually happened beyond repeating "a cardboard sign"?

She was holding up the sign, looking away from the racers. One of them hit the sign and crashed, taking out dozens of others.
