The dual threats of heat and drought could spell disaster for communities along the US west coast, as the region faces the potential for record temperatures this weekend and more in store for the summer.
With a heat wave gripping much of the region for over the past week, the threat for wildfires, blackouts and water shortages only increases as it experiences its worst drought in 20, and potentially even 1,200 years if it continues, and even hotter conditions are expected for this weekend.
Already, temperatures have reached 116 degrees in Las Vegas and 115 degrees in Phoenix. On Thursday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a statewide emergency, warning that the state's power grid was under stress due to the heat, and called on residents to conserve electricity.
It's likely to get worse, with places in the northwest such as Portland, Oregon and Redding, California potentially in for temperatures topping 112 degrees and 113 degrees respectively this weekend.
And it's only the start of summer.

Sounds like a typical riot in Portland, Oregon!
Government mismanagement is a huge part of the potential problems from any natural disaster.
Forest management and wise water storage and use would go a long way to preventing the problems US residents will be facing should the weather be extreme.
Prepper ping.
Bad weather or wildfires could cause a lot of food production and transport issues.
There have been threads addressing the potential for a wheat crop failure, which means a real problem for basic staples. Best to get ready for it now.
Yes I’m going to be right underneath it, and it’s already quite hot so we’re expecting even hotter.
Mind you I am not so sure about 1,200 years, it was pretty hot in 2003 as well.
The wildfire risk is increasing 90% due to greater human activity (and a certain amount of arson) and 10% due to any change in the climate. There have been slightly more moderate climate intervals in the past but most of this region is semi-arid to desert and always has been (since the ice age at least), what has changed the most is that people are now crowded into the region and the most popular lifestyle is “exurban” meaning that people have settled a lot of dry areas around forest margins. It’s no wonder there are so many wildfire emergencies in this region.
Geeez. If that article isn’t a dog whistle to Earth First type eco terrorists...
So Newsom says he will JIST NOW begin clearing fuel out of the forests. A little too late.
Insurers have been taking a hard look at the millions of Californians who live in areas with a very high risk of wildfires, especially in recent years when a series of costly fires incinerated thousands of rural homes. From 2015 through 2019, insurers dropped property coverage for more than 143,000 customers in 13 counties,
That is very true. But 112 in Portland, OR beats the all-time record high of 107 in 1942.
In North Idaho, some insurers are telling homeowners they won’t have insurance if there is a tree within 100 feet of your house. One insurer says 200 feet.
That is just plain impossible in most of North Idaho.
Yep, the Central Valley Project (Feds) and The State Water Project were designed to give 5 years of drought protection.
Hope not! All those democrat aholes will want to leave to places real Americans don’t want them.
this is very important training for most of the people in these areas
given their final destination, better get used to it
its gonna be a very dry heat
And yet they are dumping thousands of gallons of water in the ocean. I can’t reconcile the thinking on this.
