ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) – Asheville Police will no longer be sending officers to respond to certain calls because of a shortage of officers, the department said in a release Wednesday.
The department reports it’s lost 84 officers since the start of last year.
“We have an agency that has provided services at a high level for a long time, but the circumstances have come to pass that we don’t have the staffing to maintain that level of service,” said Deputy Chief of Police Mike Yelton.
The department said it’s no longer responding to crimes including thefts under $1,000 where there is no suspect information, vehicle break ins where there is no suspect information, “minimal damage and/or graffiti” where there is no suspect info, and reports of fraud, scams and identity theft.
“Our primary responsibility is to maintain a staff of officers that are available to respond to the most severe calls,” Yelton said.
Victims of crimes to which police no longer respond can still file reports online, but 7News is told there’s no guarantee they’ll be investigated, as the investigative unit is down 50 percent of its personnel.
Some city residents are concerned.

Yup. dump on the 62K who voted for trump
What circumstances? How did this happen? Why can’t you tell us why, Mr. Police PR unit, which for some reason is still funded.
Eventually situations will demand that law abiding citizens start forming vigilante groups and their own armed patrols to protect themselves and their property. Where I live I can display a firearm to dissuade someone from committing a property crime. If that same perp decides to attack me by advancing in a threatening manner then I can use the firearm. We have neighborhood watch, I have alarmed my house. We also have had some mysterious shootings of prowlers for which there appears to be no shooter! I don’t know about Asheville though. Maybe they will allow property crimes and just suck it up.
Areas around Asheville, like Weaverville and Hendersonville, are very nice places to live, though. My brother was an Asheville PD officer for 13 years before he moved home to Florida. It was crazy town.

In 1 1/2 years? Something is going on for that many to move on.
Granted a lot has changed during the last few months during the
lock down. But 84 officers?
Instead of Asheville, try Blowing Rock, NC. Smaller town right up on the Blue Ridge next to Boone. I spent a weekend there a few years back. IMHO, one of the nicest places I have ever been in the USA.
And so it begins
The cancer that is Asheville will spread and consume most of western NC EXCEPT for rural mountain areas along the Tennessee border...do NOT travel those windy, steep mountain roads in a Yugo with a Biden or Bernie bumper sticker after dark...SOLID Trump country. :-)
Actually, Trump supporters would help these lunatics if required, the danger is driving in a Blue city with a Trump sticker, they'll kill you.
Gee... And what happened to Asheville? Could it be the infestation of uber progressive city folk and lgbtqwtf ?
Collateral damage...just like us here in Illinois. I share their pain.
It is gorgeous there. But that’s what democrats do...ruin the best spots.
I went to high school in Asheville in the late 80s. Back then it was 90% Appalachia and 10% “arts community”. Over time the artsy fartsy types from Yankee Land moved in more and more. Now they are the majority. Its clearly wealthier than it was back then but the common sense that used to prevail is going going gone.
Have you ever been to Mt. Mitchell? Over the last thirty years my wife and I have spent at least one hundred days camped out there. I used to say North Carolina was as beautiful as a jr California, without the fruits and nuts. That’s no longer applicable.
Officer shortage looting ensues or as the left call it early Christmas shopping.
True. 10 miles north, east, south, or west of asheville is dark red. Infestation is asheville proper. Retire anywhere else in western nc.
Disagree, but I could be wrong. Right now Hendersonville, Brevard, and Waynesville are pretty red.
Hendersonville seems to have peaked as far as new people moving in.
I never have, but my older brother has been several times.
He lives in Charlotte. His oldest son was married in Blowing Rock a couple years back. hence my visit for the wedding.
Both of his sons went to Appalachian State in Boone, NC.
