Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on May 18-19 when a pair of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. The two CMEs left the sun on consecutive days: One from sunspot AR2822 on May 13th, the next from sunspot AR2823 on May 14th. Individually, the CMEs appear to be weak and insubstantial; however, they could add up to a geomagnetic storm when they arrive in quick succession this Tuesday.
“...a pair ... is expected...”
ugh
Aw jeez. I’m just in the process of getting a fan dipole put up. Damn sun.
Better things are coming, so they say. I know the A, K, and SFI numbers have continuously sucked since I got my license a couple months ago.
New ham here, so I have no base of comparison from which to work. Looking to the future though.
There is a daily 5-7 minute update on YouTube early in the morning from Phoenix. Principally, it links solar activity to terrestrial response
Here is the link to the channel’s latest update if anyone wants to check it out. (Added bonus...the guy is relatively conservative)

That’s a good point, I guess.
I live just barely south of 45 degrees north latitude. It’s supposed to get cloudy around here tomorrow for a couple of days.
I’ll look to the sky when I can and hope for the best.
I guess we’ll wait to put up our big backyard umbrella then!
BOOM! Tick tock!
These solar storm warnings mean jack.
You certainly won’t read about a legit Carrington-like event because the internet machine will be out of juice.
Even the telegraph office will be down.
“Even the telegraph office will be down.”
good one
BTW, the Erf's magnetic field strength dropped 10% 1800- 2000, 5% in the decade between 2000 and 2010, and there doesn't appear to be any available data for the last decade.
I'm certain someone knows just how much, but for some strange reason it isn't being reported to mere mortals.
And the most recent event had much higher effect than expected based on the 2010 field strength!
I wonder why?
Yeah, gave up looking for that.
I think the scientists that did this research are sleeping with the fishes.

The UFOs will save us.
The Earth’s magnetic field actually reverses on a fairly regular basis. We are at a point where it is switching again. Instead of all the charged particles getting funneled to the poles it hits the atmosphere everywhere when the field is at the zero point.
Yeah, one. Like a pair of glasses.
Or a pair of doctors.
Or as I like to call them, a paradox.
With a slight chance of Murder Hornets..
And if ‘everyone knows that’ and we, for the most part, do, why is the current value of the earth’s magnetic field such a secret, hmmmm?
So should I just skip work tomorrow? Dang! I wish I knew about this before I went to work today!

Earlier this year, US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the British Geological Survey (BGS) were forced to update the World Magnetic Model a year ahead of schedule due to the speed with which the magnetic north pole is shifting out of the Canadian Arctic and toward Russia’s Siberia.
