It makes sense to me, that it was the kickoff. I know I’ve seen some talk about there were cases before the official start, but were overlooked because no one was looking for it.
If this event was the catalyst, then there should be some evidence early on throughout the military in various countries. Intentional or accidental, you’re right that probably never will know. I’m sure any documents one way or another are long gone.
