The man was bitten near the thumb on his left hand while he apparently attempted to pick up the venomous snake with a pair of barbecue tongs in an effort to protect children who were in the area, said John Welsh, an Animal Services spokesperson.
Firefighters treated the man on scene before transporting to him a nearby hospital.
Officer Mike McGree responded and located the snake coiled near some bushes. Equipped with tongs that reach about 5 feet and a humane storage bucket, he set about trying to trap the reptile.
Meanwhile, a crowd had gathered to watch, with some whipping out their cellphones to take photos and film the interaction, according to McGee.
The area has sign an uptick of rattlesnake sightings in recent weeks as the weather begins to warm up. McGee himself has responded to at least four calls in the past few weeks, safely removing and releasing two of the snakes, according to Welsh.
But when it comes to dealing with rattlesnakes or other dangerous reptiles, Animal Services Commander Chris Mayer warned the public against using items such as cooking utensils to remove them.

Too bad he couldn’t shoot it.
“A crowd gathered to watch, with some whipping out their cellphones”
I’ll bet when the rattlesnake jumped and bit the man, some lady in the crowd screamed. In the movies, somebody always screams, as though it was a complete shock that a snake would bite a person.
Coronaviper?
Did he say “Hold my beer” first?
Dumb fool! He should have used pliers!
Next time, BBQ iguanas.
Dude, you’re supposed to kill it before you BBQ it.
Wish I was in Tijuana.
A .22 and bird shot would have done it. A bb gun and a head shot even.
The Animal Officer who responded to remove the snake did end up euthanizing it, because releasing it could have resulted in its going back to the housing development.
If you can’t handle a rattlesnake, how do you go pee?
I carry, not for snakes. I carry in case I have to shoot a dumbass.
If you have a tong in both hands is that a pair of tongs or a pair of tongs squared? Just asking for a friend.
If you’re a snake and a Texan is coming after you with BBQ tongs, you might be in trouble.
California...maybe not.
“Hold muh sauce”.
Must be log grabbing tongs for a wood fired grill. They probably wouldn't have even grabbed tight enough. Shoulda grabbed a shovel and chopped it's head off.
“We’re gonna need a bigger set of tongs...”
No, not really. This is just one reason why I carry a Walther PPS!
Did he catch the Corona Virus? Would a mask have protected him? Or, if he was wearing one, did it fail him?
