Carl Mock, 40, who lived in the park gateway community of West Yellowstone, died Saturday, two days after he was attacked while fishing alone in a forested area along the Madison River... managed to call 911 after the attack and was found after searchers looked for him for about 50 minutes.

The grizzly was killed Friday after it charged a group of seven game wardens and other personnel as they approached the scene of the attack. Several people fired at the animal and it died about 20 yards (18 meters) from the group, Jacobsen said.

Officials said they are confident the bear that was killed is the one that attacked Mock.

This is why I don’t find a trip to Yellowstone exciting.

Four years ago, we spent a day in Yellowstone on our journey from Dallas to Spokane. You wouldn't believe the idiots we saw, trying to get close to bison for pictures.

On our way out, my then 6 YO grandson announced, "I'm bored", just as a bison was walking towards us on the other side of the road. He was no more than 6 feet from us as he passed on by.

My grandson wasn't bored any longer. lol

A friend hunts elk and mule deer in western Wyoming and Montana

Besides his rifle, he carries a 10mm pistol for bears. I have never shot a bear, so I don’t even know if that would be effective.

Not according to Lewis and Clark. They documented several instances of that very thing.

Depends on where you shoot the bear.

I like to shoot them in Seattle.

10mm is adequate if loaded with the correct ammo, i.e. a 200-220 gr cast lead bullet at 1200fps or a heavy copper solid at high velocity. I believe it was in the 2019 moose hunting season on Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, AK that an airman went looking for a downed moose in a alder patch, got charged by a brown bear (the grizzly’s larger Alaska cousin), and Glocked it with two shots to the head using the aforementioned heavy lead bullets. I’d still rather have my .45/70 though...

More important than caliber is using the correct bullet. Use solid hardcast style bullets. No hollowpoints which will flatten, not penetrate deeply enough. As far caliber goes 44mag or better for pistols is good. But rifles are far better. There are any number of bear loads available for 45-70, 444 Marlin etc.

An M2 mounted on the bad of a pickup truck is probably best, though, for Grizz.

It's best to be fully prepared.
