The consumer price index rose 0.6% from the previous month but 2.6% from the same period a year ago. The year-over-year gain is the highest since August 2018 and was well above the 1.7% recorded in February.
The index was projected to rise 0.5% on a monthly basis and 2.5% from March 2020, according to Dow Jones estimates.
Gasoline prices were the biggest contributor to the monthly gain, surging 9.1% in March and responsible for about half the overall CPI increase. Gasoline is up 22.5% from a year ago, part of a 13.2% increase in energy prices.
Food nudged higher as well, up 0.1% for the month and 3.5% for the year. The food-at-home category increased 3.3%. All six of the government’s measures of grocery store indexes rose, with the biggest gain of 5.4% in the category of meats, poultry, fish and eggs.
Food away from home increased 3.7%, while “limited services meals,” which include pickup, take out and delivery restaurants, jumped 6.5% for the year, the largest annual increase in the survey’s history dating to 1997.
...
While the inflation numbers look high, many economists as well as policymakers at the Federal Reserve expect the increase to be temporary.

9.1% ????
Try 50% +
I just had an $80 fill-up last night
Last year I could barely get $50 into the tank
Grr.
Unexpected indeed.
The clowns at the federal level have been trying to destroy the dollar for most of my adult life. What has been surprising is that it has taken this long.
Biden’s Fault.

HAMMER IT HOME!!!!!!
“Translation—they will create a new calculation for the CPI that eliminates any embarrassing increases... “
...and why not? It’s worked before. Several times.
“ Funny, I don’t remember deflation ever resulting in lower prices for every day items like food. I only remember box and can sizes being adjusted down with pricing remaining the same.”
Exactly.
When fuel prices go down, grocery prices, drugs and prices of everything else should go down. But they never do. What’s up with this?
Greed.
Perhaps price controls should be enacted.
But it’s the fault of congress for accepting bribes from lobbyists.
They do that anyway. Say they have steak in the ‘basket’. If steak goes up 50% they’ll pull steak out and substitute it with pork chops. Their rational is ....’because that is what ordinary people would do. They’ll stop eating steak and start eating pork chops. They are always substituting stuff to keep the price of what they call the ‘basket’ down.
Trillions in monopoly money printed out of thin air.
They’re either dumb or evil or both. The combination of the two is very dangerous.
LOL!! The joke of the day!
It slowly builds up, then of a sudden, it's here overnight:
Then:
60 Minutes had a softball interview with the Fed Chairman Sunday where inflation was barely mentioned, other than to say they would make sure inflation would not increase more than 2% this year. Well the 1st quarter numbers are in and the index the Social Security administration uses is already up 2%. That is an annualized rate of 8%. As they say, welcome back Jimmy Carter!
Naturally, I just got a car that takes premium gas, the world is out to get me
Last may was artificially deflated though with the pandemic and no one driving in March/April boosted inventory.
As soon as the demonrats re-occupy the WH, all the bad news becomes “unexpected” once again.
Also, corn is up to $5.83/bushel from $3.32/bushel at this time last year.
Softwood Framing lumber is up approximately 300% from a year ago.
OSB & plywood are up around 400-500%.
I know it was up but why isn’t it included in the article? The government wants to understate inflation and the MSM just goes along.
[[Unexpected?]]
Yes, that is code word for ‘fully expected’, by the lame stream media who cover for inept liberals in charge.
Naturally.
Now we have Xiden.
