A pandemic experiment in criminal justice reform takes hold in one of America's most violent cities.
A year ago, as the coronavirus began to spread across Maryland, Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby stopped prosecuting drug possession, prostitution, minor traffic violations and other low-level offenses, a move aimed at curbing Covid-19's spread behind bars.
That shift — repeated by prosecutors in many other cities — didn’t just reduce jail populations. In Baltimore, nearly all categories of crime have since declined, confirming to Mosby what she and criminal justice experts have argued for years: Crackdowns on quality-of-life crimes are not necessary for stopping more serious crime.
On Friday, Mosby announced that she was making her pandemic experiment permanent, saying Baltimore — for decades notorious for runaway violence and rough policing — had become a case study in criminal justice reform.
In the 12 months since she ordered scaled-back enforcement, violent crime is down 20 percent and property crime has declined 36 percent, she said. Homicides inched down, though Baltimore still has one of the highest homicide rates among cities nationwide. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found sharp reductions in calls to police complaining about drugs and prostitution, she said.MORE AT LINK
Decriminalizing criminal behavior - the Democrat solution to crime. The fewer minorities in jail, the more likely they are to show up at the ballot box.
I never thought prostitution should be a crime. Heck Jesus knew the most famous prostitute and became her best friend. Kinda a waste of resources if you think about it.
Rememember, you get more of what you subsidize and less of what you tax.
When you put a “jail” tax on crime, you get less of it. When you subsidize crime by allowing it, you get more of it.

My goal is to live in a state that will collapse last. All I need to do is to outlive the collapse. With apologies to future generations. I can only apologize that this is happening on my watch. All I can do is pick a state where I think socialist totalitarian oppression will come last and hope to stave it off until after I die of natural causes. That is not a happy plan but it is the only one I have got.

I don’t know but I will say, he really knew his history. Long before I ever heard anyone else say it, my father knew the commies and faggots were infiltrating the schools, the media, Hollywood, the Catholic priesthood, the employee Unions, and government.
Not to mention decades of Democrats running the cities...

This move needs to be seen literally ‘in the context of George Floyd.
The powers that be are opting not to go after drug crimes and so on to avoid any violent encounters that could lead to the next outbreak of violence in the cities.
Of course crimes are reduced when you exclude whole categories of crime from the definition of “crime.”
I don’t think it’s that. You can register a crime without finding the perp.
Most likely the reason crime fell is that the pandemic made it more difficult to commit crimes. People are at home. Businesses are closed. People weren’t driving. People and businesses did not have as much money to steal.
The declining crime rate was a trend repeated across the nation. It had nothing to do with her particular prosecution policies.
