This is from 1974. A speech by the founder of JBS, Robert Welch.
His predictions are amazing.
Video clip is 8 mins long.
Welch was virulently anti-communist and he opposed by nearly every lever of the conservative establishment of the day. The then paleocons supported him, albeit quietly.
As long as I can remember the John Birch Society has been both heralded and vilified.
I always thought they were speaking truth to power....
....but they were demonized, vilified, marginalized constantly
Just wait......we’ll see that happen on FR any moment now
I know they were vilified back in the day but watching videos like this really opens your eyes.
He was right about everything!!
How can anyone argue it?
In the early 1970s, when I was far too young to have any interest in politics, I had a teacher who HATED the John Birth Society. Hated, hated, hated. They had crazy ideas! CRAZY!!
I had no idea what she was talking about, but it always struck me that she seemed to have a serious problem if she got so worked up over some group of people.
Slow day in your neighborhood?
Well before my time but from what I gather conservatives have been told “just elect the ‘right’ Republicans and everything will be fine”
It has been a complete failure.
Look at the spineless types in the House and Senate.
Maybe people should listen to Mr. Welch and his kind...
I agree. There aren’t many Birchers left today, but they were right about most things. They were big on identifying the “New World Order” and this phrase was hung around their necks like a piece of radioactive debris. When Bush #41 used the phrase in the early 90s, the GOP’ers had no idea how to react.
Anyone who’s got the commies number is alright with me.
Back in the early 70s, I considered joining, but got talked out of it by my Dad. He supported everything they stood for, but knew that associating with them would put a target on your back.
They were mainly spot-on (hindsight), but like everything else there were some wingnuts aboard. There always are.
WFB made it a point to take them down to enable a "bigger tent" Conservative movement.
Worked for a while, but the WFB crowd had some wingnuts of their own. Just look at NR now. Ahoy maties….
I was once the Republican County Chairman in Grant County, NM.
Voter registration was 5 Dems to 1 Republican. But in spite of that we managed to elect Republicans to Congress and the Senate.
The 2 groups I could rely on every election were the John Burch Society and the Mormon Church. What a contrast. But it was true, both groups would crawl over broken glass to vote Republican. (for different reasons)
I am not nor have I ever been a member of the John Birch Society. Nor do I have a leftist bone in my body. smile.

It’s TIME to DownSize DC!
I think we’re about to see a sort of renaissance, maybe not of JBS but of grassroots organizations holding GOPers to account and it’s going to start with purging those who voted for the impeachment...
There is incredible energy to dump the likes of Cheney. This is a good thing.
Sorry
.......I didn’t give my own opinion......I thought from the first, as little as I understood, that innately they were telling the truth
Truth to power!!!!
Folks in my sphere in the South gave credence to their words/ideas
Post 11.... what is WFB ??
While in USN mid 50s-60s took an ‘interest’ in JBS.
Believe at the time (we thought) it was a bunch of retired USN/USMC types that had organized it in late 50s.
Wasn’t really all that political then but the group did pique my curiosity and sort of let it drop later on.
Some ‘history’

I'm sorry:
WFB = William F. Buckley.
NR = National Review (magazine)
Yeah, Post 11.... what is WFB ??
Freerepublic is not a telegram where space for text is limited.
I always enjoyed how Buckley could twist and contort his body in that chair while interviewing someone. It was like a coiling snake ready to strike.
More evidence to repeal the 17th Amendment...
