A variant of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 called P.1 seems to be able to reinfect people who already recovered from COVID-19, despite whatever protections their immune systems built up.
The variant, which was discovered and began circulating in Brazil back in December, poses a new threat that has scientists worried about the potential for yet another major wave of the coronavirus, The New York Times reports. It’s currently surging in the city of Manaus, but has also spread to 24 countries as well as several US states.
“It’s right to be worried about P.1, and this data gives us the reason why,” Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health epidemiologist William Hanage told the NYT.
Scientists have preliminary data about the P.1 variant’s troubling ability to reinfect coronavirus survivors, but their lab research hasn’t yet been published in an academic journal or validated in the field, the NYT reports. But experts still advise caution.
“The findings apply to Manaus, but I don’t know if they apply to other places,” Imperial College London researcher Nuno Faria, who helped lead the P.1 research, told the NYT.
Still, Faria urges extreme caution and says that we should still do absolutely everything we can to slow down the spread of the coronavirus — continuing to isolate ourselves and wear masks will continue to go a long way, even among those who think they’ve developed a resistance to the disease.
“The ultimate message is that you need to step up all the vaccination efforts as soon as possible,” Faria told the NYT. “You need to be one step ahead of the virus.”
RE: So FR is going to reprint every BS story on a new more deadly Virus on a daily basis?
Explain to us why this is a BS story in the first place. Are you saying that the information provided in this article is false? If so, which one?
RE: Ah Good! If it didn’t exist, we would have had to invent it.
Let’s face reality — THE STRAIN EXISTS ! We have to deal with it.
You win the thread. :)
lot of “iffyness” in this study.

I think you forgot the /s.
The virus is not alive. Mutation is not a process of life.
Mutation is a process of statistics. This is very bad.
There are so very many virus particles out there, compared to last year, that the statistics of mutation are beginning to guarantee worse infectiousness and worse death.
It is not alive. This is not a virus that becomes more deadly or not more deadly just because a person lives longer or shorter. It’s not optimizing. It’s not a life process.
It’s just that there are so many that we are going to see these happen, and it’s likely going to get worse. Not because it wants to get worse. Because the strains that are mild won’t be noticed. The ones that are worse will be.
We lost 20% more elderly deaths in the past 12 mos to the virus compared to a normal year. Ask your parents how they feel about that. And that 20% happened even trying all sorts of things to lessen the number.
You think dr fauxcheeze could demonstrate for us? 😷
From the Amazon. Would Jeff Bezos approve if we called it “The Amazon Virus”?
Dr. Falsi will undoubtedly recommend that face masks be permanently sutured to the faces of the proletariat.
Even the commie ba$tard$ are right about something evry now and then.
I suspect we'll have nearly as many before the next presidential election - maybe longer. :-)
They provide significantly more neutralizing antibodies than mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 infections.
https://www.statnews.com/2021/01/25/moderna-vaccine-less-effective-variant/
The problem with some of the variants (Brazil, South Africa, etc.) is that they have some level of resistance to neutralizing antibodies produced based on the April 2020 variant. So if it took 5 antibodies before, maybe it takes 7 or 10 or 12 with the new variant (just throwing out numbers as an example). If a mild COVID-19 infection produces 6 neutralizing antibodies, you’re fine when exposed to the April 2020 variant again. But throw the Brazil or South Africa variant that requires 7 or 10 or 12 and you can become infected again. If the vaccine causes you to produce 20, then you’re still fine with the Brazil or South Africa variants.
I’m very much oversimplifying things here, but it’s purposely done to make it easy to see what’s happening and what the difference is. Anyone who had a severe COVID-19 infection is likely producing plenty of antibodies and is not at significant risk of reinfection. But most infections with COVID-19 are mild and produce a mild response.
That is why they loaded up Covid positive illegals and spread them around.
“Our models say...” is all they have. Where are the actual people who got symptomatic covid from 1 strain, got over it, and got symptomatic covid from the 2nd strain?
They haven’t found them yet! But, “Our models say...”
What a crock!!!
