Jacks and marbles were great favorites. How about Hopscotch?
We all carried a piece of chalk so we could draw one where ever we went.
I couldn't even find a picture of the configuration we used back in the 50's.

I used to ask for a shiny new golf ball for my birthday, since they seemed to work the best on the hopscotch stairs area at my school.AND was thrilled when my dad painted a hopscotch area on our sidewalk. Spent many an hour playing there as a kid

Remember marbles too!! For some reason I wasn't into them. Maybe it was considered a 'boys' game? Not sure why that would be though. Would love to have jacks and marbles now, before they disappear.
I can't tell you what configuration we used. Was this the one you were thinking of?

I used to love playing marbles! My uncle worked at Whirlpool and gave me some ball bearings to use as “Steelies” That was a hoot!

We had so many eye/hand coordination games when we were kids. Just using thumbs on a screen is definitely not the same.

No, that's not it. IIRC 1 and 2 were side by side to start and 8 and 10 were side by side at the top.
The top was rounded.
