Weekly Garden Thread - February 13-19, 2021
February 13, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 02/13/2021 6:28:23 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Blueberries would be good, but I think that they would have to get the short bushes or the cold would kill them. (Zone 5?) You probably need to plant a lot or use bird netting!

You could try saskatoons since they grow in Canada.

I have some Viking aronia, which are high in antioxidents. (Rabbits use them for browse and you would have to defend them with a wire wrap in the winter... Japanese beetle also like them along with Victoria and Prune d’Ente 770 plums.

This year I lost all of the Aronia fruit before it even ripened. (Cardinals? grossbeaks? Something like that.

Zone 6B. KS/MO Border 1100 feet, 5:07PM -3 F.

Its also a 9-0-0 fertilizer. Pricey, but I use it on my lawn.

Corn meal gluten....If you have problem with ants use crushed corn meal gluten, powdered sugar, and some borax. They cant digest the CMG, borax is a slow acting toxin that will be taken back to the colony without killing the worker ants in the process. You could also add some diatomaceous earth. (Keep your bait station dry and near your problem area.)

“You could try Saskatoons since they grow in Canada.”

We have three - I like them for the very early spring bloom- the fruit goes right to the birds. :)

I’ll do some studying on Blueberries. I pick my battles carefully. I just ‘plant the seed’ and then eventually it’s HIS idea, an it’s all cool, and it gets done. ;)

Blizzard here. Will snow all night. And it’s very cold, which historically is unusual if there’s heavy snow. Normally it’s no colder than 20-something if there’s lots of snow.

Global warming.

Saskatoons...what do they taste like? Seed size?

Blueberries. I like Chandler and Darrow, but I am not certain about hardiness.

Forget the cold, I have enough armor. Give me -10 and DRY. There’s too much Pete, too much, and it’s only just begun. It’s gonna start to melt next week and be a flood.

It IS scary! I’ve been staring at that photo on and off for three days now. I’ve probably spent two or three hours total, maybe a little more time than that, trying to trace that darn snake’s body.

At first I thought most of the tail-end and head areas were under sticks and leaves, and not visible. But now I think 99% of that animal is exposed to the camera!

The tail-end is easy: just follow the S-curve keeping your eye peeled for those leaf-shaped camouflaged markings. You can follow them almost all the way to the tip of its tail (the markings will be getting smaller, of course, because there is less real estate near the tail).

At the other end, things are a little trickier: Instead of diving under the leaves near that green leaf, his body makes a sharp left turn and heads due North for a few inches. If you look carefully, you can see where the animal’s neck narrows a bit just behind the jaw muscles, then flares out again over the muscles, and angles down toward its squarish nose, with some weird camo markings on top of its head.

That thing is a slithering NIGHTMARE!

I’ll have to try something else.

For privacy, you do NOT need to use your last name!

As much as it PAINS me, I am: 'Grandma's Double Traveler.' ;)

'Chandler' blueberry produces HUGE berries and is a rather large shrub. Good Edible Landscaping material, actually!

Saskatoon Service Berry berry:

Smaller than blueberries. Sweet taste when fully ripe.

SO pretty as a hedge, though they only bloom for about 5-7 days up here by us.

Nice hedge, beautiful flowers!

Chandler Blue berry also has an extended harvest period.

Not a bad thing for home growers, but not as desirable for commercial growers and pick your own berry patches who like to be able to schedule picking, get it done, and move on!

It might not be a bad thing to have the Saskatoons if the harvest period overlaps the blueberry harvest period, and if the Birds will also like them the same or more than blueberries.

Does anyone have experience growing potatoes in a hefty bag with drain holes cut into it? We used to grow potatoes but they are hard to dig at our ages. And what medium would you use? Thanks in advance

When my boys were little, we’d grow potatoes in stacks of old tires. They loved it, and we got a LOT of potatoes that way.

We weren’t NEARLY as meticulous as this tutorial instructs, and it worked just fine.

You could achieve the same effect in any large, wide container with drainage, I’d imagine.

If he really wants a Honeyberry, maybe the ones from St Lawrence would work better? They tend to select for hardiness there.

It was a sunny warm day. I sunbathed for 15 min to get vitamin D

Ran to the shed ... snow still over my ankles.
2 extra hours of sun since 12/21. Winter is facing defeat, even in Chicago

Snow, melt, slush, freeze, ice, snow ...

Is that the cycle?
