The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
We just got our new warming mat and grow light - a nice thought to counter the next foot of snow on its way.
Don’t panic! Once you’ve been at it, say, 50 years or so, there’s STILL a lot to learn! :)
LOL! People are so creative! My friend and I have been sharing these back and forth this past week. I’m going to win the game when she sees this one! :)
Yikes! I’ve not seen that one, but once in a while in the woods we find one that is shaped like that, but bright red/maroon.
Also creepy!
‘We have everything we need right here.’
A lot of us have been lucky in that sense. Still, LIBERATE AMERICA! Yeesh! Enough, already!
Ugh! We’ve got 3-6” coming, and that’s bad enough. Blowing and drifting, which is a PITA.
Gonna tie a rope from the house down to the barn ala ‘Pa Ingalls’ so I can get to the dogs, mule and steer in the morning. ;)
We are getting a ‘sneux’* storm starting tonight/tomorrow & maybe another couple of ‘wrap-around’ inches on Monday. It was 16 this morning when I got up - really enjoyed my first cup of hot coffee, knowing it was that cold outside!
Braved the “crowds” of folks stocking up on milk, bread ... all the things they think they need for sneux. I got some sunflower seeds & suet for the birds .... and cream for my coffee. I am set for food, otherwise. The last little thing to do - put the sneux shovel on the porch, so I don’t have to wade through 6” of sneux to get it from the garage. February (first half at least) is looking like stormy/sneux weather, according to our local independent (non-TV) meteorologist, who actually analyzes weather patterns rather than reading whatever NWS is saying.
Got some inside projects that have been waiting for a sneux day!
*someone I know used to call snow ‘sneux’ ... it’s always cracked me up.
My gosh!
Too funny.
They’ve been doing that periodically. I think that makes 3 times this month.
A lot of seed companies are selling out fast. Some of the smaller ones are able to keep up, because they don’t have as many customers to begin with. If there’s a specific variety you’re looking for, try searching with that name. There might be other places that carry it. That’s how I was able to buy seeds for the “Thai Extra Long Luffa Gourd”, even though Baker Creek was sold out :)
I will use it to refresh my existing above ground garden and in my new above ground garden that I will be building........
LOL. We had a surprise 40+ inches in one day on Dec 16th. We just didn’t know where to begin. At one point I decided to shovel a side path, and stepped from a protected spot with about a foot of snow, into an open spot that was close to four feet deep. Poof! I actually felt kind of a bit of panic trying to back out of that. I am just five feet tall, so it was scary.
I was looking for Heavy Hitter okra, but its all sold out in the places I checked. maybe next year!
Thanks for padding my Jung’s pension plan, LOL!
I’m seeing plenty on the racks at the likes of Walmart and Farm & Fleet. I think we should all be able to get what we need, but maybe not the exact varieties we want this season.
Sneux. Love that! :)
So far, we’ve gotten a layer of icy YUCK! Snow to start fairly soon as the temp keeps falling.
We’re looking at NEGATIVE temps this upcoming week. Bleck!
I sent you an e-mail! I’ve been off-line for a day due to re-flooring the Family Room and we had to disconnect the modem/server and stuff. ;)
Yikes! Safety First, Ladysforest!
Funny to think of all the snow forts we built as kids after major snow storms with NO architecture training, whatsoever!
No cave ins, but it was always a possibility!
