The Keto Way: What If Meat Is Our Healthiest Diet?
Wall Street Journal ^ | January 29, 2021 | Gary Taubes

Posted on 01/30/2021 6:01:42 AM PST by karpov

Choosing to avoid meat and eat a plant-based diet has never seemed so virtuous and necessary. Between the intrinsic cruelty of industrial livestock production and livestock’s climate footprint—estimated by the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization to be 14.5% of all greenhouse gases world-wide, significantly greater than that of plant agriculture—it has become increasingly difficult to defend the place of meat and animal-sourced foods in our diets. Jonathan Safran Foer, the novelist turned animal-rights activist, may have best captured this thinking in his 2019 nonfiction book, “We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast.” As he writes, “We cannot keep the kind of meals we have known and also keep the planet we have known. We must either let some eating habits go or let the planet go. It is that straightforward, that fraught.”

An essential part of this argument is the proposition that animal-sourced foods, and particularly red and processed meats, aren’t just bad for the planet but harmful for the people who eat them. As the journalist Michael Pollan famously urged in his 2008 bestseller “In Defense of Food,” that is why we should eat “mostly plants.” This has become the lone piece of dietary counseling on which most nutritional authorities seemingly agree. It creates a win-win proposition: By eating mostly (or even exclusively) fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, while getting our proteins and fats from plant-based sources, we maximize our likelihood of living a long and healthy life while also doing what’s right for the planet.

But is it that simple? A growing body of evidence suggests it isn’t, at least not for many of us.

The other food movement that has won increased acceptance over the past decade is the low-carbohydrate, high-fat ketogenic diet—keto, for short

Makes sense to me.

The government with it’s “scientific” food pyramid will kill you. Diabetes 2 can be cured with the keto diet as opposed to taking drugs which make you sicker and cause amputations.

Why not cure health problems rather than dump toxic chemicals into your body to alleviate symptoms?

Your brain needs fats. Is there a correlation between low fat/unhealthy diets and Alzheimer’s, which is called diabetes 3?

Michele Obama, with her health interest, missed a great chance here to really help people.

I’m not “full keto” ... but when you stop the carbs, the weight goes down, the blood sugar levels decreased, etc. Eggs, cheese and meat, (salad of course), and it works great!

This time we really are doomed. They mean it. Science says. It’s a crisis. Didn’t you see the concern in John Kerry’s mashed up face? He has a fleet of private jets on standby so he can get the word out of just how we only have 9 years now.

Picked up a boatload of tri-tip today at the store...had to visit several to pull it off, though...going to go on a steak and eggs binge for a while. Sorry, but tri-tip trumps bacon.

Our grocery store chain just started carrying tri-tip. They call it triggered-tip roast. (In Texas.)

We used to see it all of the time, up in NYC, when visiting family.

What, exactly, is it....as in....what is your fave way to prepare?

Will have to look for those.

Hard to find decent tasting low carb tortillas.

We like fit & active brand, from Aldi. Tastes almost like the non-carb version.

“Inspirational”

Yeah - every once in awhile I think I should try it. She doesn’t act too deprived. I sure do like my carbs though.

A local store brings in a smoker every week and will smoke the meat of your choice as long as you purchased it there. Since it’s winter (so to speak...it’s Tennessee), grill use can be spotty. Otherwise, into the Ninja Foodi. We’re not fancy. Love my tri-tip.

LOW CARB / KETO PING!!!

Thanks Jane!

For those who may not know, Gary Taubes is the father of the modern Keto movement. Atkins was on to it, but even he knew that much work needed to be done. In the end, as I understand it, Atkins knew that low carb was definitely the way to go, but he wasn’t sure about the rest (fat versus protein). So it winds up that Gary and others, particularly Nina, figured out that you don’t want high protein levels (i.e., low fat), you want it the other way around.

By the way, with AOC now empowered, expect our new masters to go after meat, particularly beef...which happens to also be the healthiest food on the planet. Elections have consequences.

[p.s., anyone wanting to join, or leave, my Low-Carb ping list, just let me know, privately or publicly]

Choosing to listen to anyone talk about diets has never seemed to make sense. Have you ever noticed that a lot of diet advocates are really messed up? Take Oprah for example: fat, ugly, dumb, leftist. Smell a vegan. Now that is messed up.

That is true with regard to vegan diets. Everybody I know that promote that lifestyle (including celebrities) are NOT people that I want to be like. All of them are a combination of fat, miserable and unhappy.

This is very poor optics for those promoting the vegan lifestyle. They need to get some better spokesmen!

With King Biden’s administration, you can bet whoever sets anti-beef policy is heavily invested in the fake meat industry.

Everybody is different. If you have a genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes, I think low carb or keto is the way to go. On the other hand, there are people like my mother—in-law who eats a standard American diet and she is 90 and going strong.

Guess I’m losing it. I thought I posted on FR about Braum’s Carb Watch bread, but I can’t find it now. This bread is hands down the best low carb bread for taste, and it’s about the same price as any other grocery store bread. Two slices are 60 calories and 7 net grams of carbs.

Braum’s stores are in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, and I’m afraid they don’t ship. I’m thinking of calling a few of the stores that are the closest to where I live and asking the manager if he would order a whole box for me and ship it here. Our oldest son used to bring us care packages, but he is moving out of Braum’s country this month. Oh, the humanity!
