I was with FR even before my sign up date states. Lost my password and couldn't retrieve it back then.
God bless Jim Robinson but with a little effort, allowing "likes" and a little advertising, etc. FR would be worth billions.

No. Everything is controlled.
Jim would have had to sell out, and do things he would never agree to do, allowing the powers behind such things to own him with no doubt through inescapable blackmail.
My guess is the offer was made, and he declined, or their surveillance of him was indicative of the fact he would never take the deal, so they never bothered. Honestly, I am surprised nobody came in and destroyed this place yet, like with Hotwheels and 8Chan.
The fact FR is not worth billions tells you pretty much all you need to know about Jim.

Well you might check with Frontier - they may have openings.

"...but with a little effort, allowing "likes" and a little advertising, etc. FR would be worth billions." I've been around for a while too, and often find myself thinking that simply having thumbs up/down would be a big positive. Certainly advertising would have generated a lot of revenue, but I can also imagine it having a deleterious effect.

Usually, when an impulse comes over me to patronize someone and demonstrate my superiority, I confess it to my Lord and ask His help in refraining from acting upon it. So far, that formula has worked in preventing me, during my twenty-two years here, from posting anything resembling this narcissistic, self-serving attack on Mr. Robinson, your better.
I strongly suggest that you take a self-imposed timeout of significant duration to reflect on this.

I'm a lot like you; I signed up before 2000 using my college email address and just had to create a new account in 2002 once I lost it.
I differ from you, though, in that the beauty of Free Republic is that it's not profit-driven. It's not at the mercy of advertisers or investors (some malicious), having to change with the shifting winds. I was away for a while and when I came back, it was like I never left.

agreed. nothing like free republic can survive if it is grown fast or if it grows past the ability of on man to manage it....if this had been grown all that would of remained was the name free republic....my biggest fear is that free republic would not survive Jim no longer running the place...…Jim if you are reading this you are to remain alive and healthy enough to enjoy running this site indefinitely.

What company hosts the Freerepublic website?
I hope Mr. Robinson makes a decent living off of the contributions he gets from us.
The site doesn’t need “likes” because we need to look at all posts and not be seduced by the most liked ones to the exclusion of others.

It didn’t change the McDonald brothers. They remained small time right up to their retirement, while Ray Kroc became a billionaire using their name & platform.
