Found her(hound mix) in a rescue shelter 12 years ago. She was appx. 2 years old by the vet when we got her. So she is appx. 14 years old.

They say losing a pet is like losing a family member. Mebbe. I think more of my pets than many family members. My pets never lied to me. My pets never looted grannies estate when nobody was looking. My pets never kept secrets from me. My pets never took advantage of me. I can trust my pets to love me back without reservation and they know I have loved them from birth. And my pets NEVER bring up politics in my earshot and tell me smugly “We’re Democrats”. I’ve lost pets over the years and I still grieve if I think of them for very long. I will never forget them as long as I live.

“Lola “, Canine Freeper and K-9 companion of Recovering Ex-Hippie, passed away August 3.

If you google that.above...the freeper thread will come up. Freeprs were so kind to me ...and you can read about her and her passing away peacefully.

I know your pain. See my tagline that hasn’t changed since the day I lost her. Prayers for you and your pup.

I do love that dog and cherish the time with her. I hope she is around a long time. She still walks 4 miles a day with me and the other dogs.

Understand.

Our losses have always included a vet helping. Our vet is a man of a big heart, he truly cared. We were placed in a special comfortable room with no rush as he knew we were saying our goodbyes and he also knew that can’t be rushed.

Our special one’s all passed in our arms, embraced by love.

And the vet? Our vet was the very embodiment of compassion and kindness. He gave us privacy and as much time as we needed to say our final goodbyes.

Our special Cooper was loved by all and “our” vet tech asked to be there with us and we agreed, as she truly loved Cooper as her own. We all openly grieved. Our Vet held it together but his voice betrayed his broken heart. All us us were a mess.

Rotties are remarkable dogs. I would not have found this out without my stepson who rescued Butch about ten years ago. He was the sweethearted, goofy gentle giant that most people do not know they are. Jacob was young and unfocused at the time and Butch gave him some responsibility. His love for Butch also equated to love for rescues in general. He became very active in our local shelter that had dreams of a new building. We lost Jacob in an auto accident seven years ago and Butch became my responsibility. Eventually he began to fail. His hips were failing badly so I made a sling so I could help him up the steps at night. The decision was becoming inevitable. I brought him upstairs one night and helped him get comfy in his bed and then started on the nightly massage which he loved. He gave me a surprised look, wagged his tail, and was gone. I can’t help but think that Jacob pulled some strings up their to make it easy for me.
I paid for the lobby at the new shelter as a memorial to them both.

Dear Lord Jesus,

In this life You task us with caring for things. You command us to have dominion over all creatures and to be stewards of Your creation.

Lord, Biff’s dog whom You have given to him to steward is sick and needs to be cared for. I pray that You give him the ability to be a good steward to his faithful companion.

Help Biff to get her the medical care she needs. Be with the vets and others who are treating her.

I pray that You give her a restful night and graciously send Your Spirit to drive away all disease. Please renew the health of Biff’s dear friend.

In Your abundant mercy, hear my prayer.

Amen.

It’s one of the most emotional decisions we make in our lives. I’m sure everyone here knows that and will have you in their hearts.

It never gets easier, but your pup trusts you to do the right thing. Having been through this a number of times, I’ve found that waiting too long is worse than going in a bit early.

Hugs and hugs and hugs to you!!! It’s a terrible thing to go through. The love and companionship of our dogs are irreplaceable, and make this heartache a little more bearable. All of our hearts are with you.

This is sad news. It hurts bad, I know. You gave her the best life you could and love her dearly. She knows this and has so much gratitude for it.

I lost two beloved cats in the last 6 months. Was there when one had to be put down, was about to pass on his own. The other I arrived at the animal hospital after an overnight stay to decide whether to put her down, 5 minutes too late. Her heart had stopped. She died alone. I will never forgive myself for making her hang on and not being there for her at the transition.
