The Rise and Fall of McDonald's Pizza, a Doomed Fast-Food Icon

Do you remember the McPizza?

Gen Z probably doesn't. But, for children of the '80s and '90s, the dish brings back memories of a time when you could order a pizza alongside your burgers and fries.

For some reason, McDonald's Twitter account also recently decided to reminisce about its lost pizza, tweeting: "remember when we sold McPizza."

Memories of McPizzas past provide an opportunity to walk down memory lane, savoring the cheesy nostalgia of menu items lost but not forgotten.

McDonald's first debuted its pizza in the '80s. Rivals mocked McDonald's attempts, with Pizza Hut even running ads calling the pies "McFrozen" in 1989.

The pizza became a part of a wider effort from the chain to win over customers around dinnertime in the early '90s. McDonald's also tested items including "grilled cod served on french bread with sauce, lettuce and tomato, and 'Chicken Zestado,' a grilled chicken breast served on pita bread with salsa," the Associated Press reported in 1991.

McRib was a menu item from 1981 to 1985. It didn’t sell very well. I suspect there’s a very devoted but rather small following that they can take him advantage of every so often.

“McDonald’s bought so much pork prices went up. Pork prices go up and your profit falls.

I recall the same thing happened (or reportedly happened by the Media) with Tomato prices when the McDLT was introduced.

I loved those McDLT’s! And one could salt it good before assembling for inhalation... Tried the McRib, McMeh. Loved the fish but so pricey! Used to get two cheeseburgs for a buck, called it lunch. Lost big weight doing that, cut back on the big lunches with the coworkers for a month. From 250 to 185. When I got slim, I found I could eat whatever I wanted, just not a ton of it. Worked like a charm, friends asked me if everything was OK, said yeah, just got tired of hauling all that excess weight around. I had toolboxes and refrigeration repair equipment to schlep around, that was enough!

The article is mixing up two different menu items.

McPizza was a pizza pocket sandwich available at select outlets in the mid 80’s. I used to get it regularly at the McDonalds in Wapakoneta, just off I-75 when I was going back and forth to college in the mid 80’s. I wasn’t available at all outlets.

McDonalds Pizza was actual pizza sold by McDonalds later in the 80’s or early 90’s at most stores.

It was never nationally released... it existed but at least in the US it was never nationally available... really not sure why the author leaves the impression it was a common menu item or why McDonalds themselves would even bring it up.... unless they want to start a whisper campaign and plan on relaunching the product or something.

The McDlt was not cancelled because of environmentalists. It was cancelled because it didn’t sell.

I worked the lunch and dinner rush at McD’s through HS and part of College. On a typical day we might sell a handful or two. Basically we sold more Filet of Fish than we did McDlt’s on an average day.

It wasn’t canceled due to packaging, it was cancelled because the sales volume didn’t justify it staying on the menu..

I had a McPizza while traveling in California when I was in college. Fresno was the location. It was nothing special, and I was glad that it wasn’t offered all over the nation.

Except for the Le Grand Veggie Improbable, I would try these.

Thanks for posting these pics. I have a hard time on my phone doing that.

I’ve probably eaten something from McDonalds about once a week for the last 55 years. I know Morgan Spurlock thinks I should be dead, but I’m hanging in there.

I really enjoyed McDs chicken wings about 10 years back. My kids worked there at the time and when wings were discontinued I inherited a 50 lbs bag.

Hard to beat the flavor of free.

I decided to check the dates, the McSteak Im talking about was not the ‘79 chopped steak. Years earlier there was minute steak version, at least there was one being offered in the Milwaukee area during that time with the onion nuggets which I just learned was ‘75.
