Christmas Mistake in a Time of Covid (Vanity)
Self | 12/25/2020 | Super7man

Posted on 12/25/2020 7:03:26 AM PST by super7man

I made a grave error this year in purchasing a gift for a family member. Since the advent of Covid and the restrictions placed on social contact, I decided to be a good sport and shop online this year for a gift. I made the mistake of ordering some overpriced pears from Harry and David (although the box is nice). But as always, no good deed will go unpunished. Now on every internet page I go to (except FR) there is this ad from H&D that flips and churns catching my eye. Ho, Ho, Ho, long will this last? A time and a time and a half? Maybe I'll go to H&D and ask for forgiveness and the will remove this from my internet world.

Do you have your “do not track me” checked on your browser? Not that it works that well, because even with Ad Block, I see merchandise pushed at me the minute I do any kind of search related to that. I just ignore it.

Buckle up, Pilgrim. Our forefathers crossed the nation in wagon trains and had to endure drought, hostile Indians, rattlesnakes, pop-up ads and probably worst of all telemarketers. if they did it, we can too.

I actually don't mind this as it helps to subsidize all the content we get online. So what if I order a particular product only to get sidebar ads on it for the next six months. I like that product and I will likely buy it again.

I remember when television used to be "free" but we had to sit through all those 30 second commercials. That was sort of the price you paid for getting "free" content.

Now the average person (not me) pays over $100/mo for cable TV - much of which still has commercials anyhow.

Ho, Ho, Ho, long will this last?

Until the next thing you buy on line, then ads for that will take over.

Go to the website for the ‘little blue pill’. Should take care of that problem!

The best part about those commercials we get to pay for? There are more of them than ever before! It used to be around ten minutes per hour, but now it seems to be closer to ten minutes per HALF hour. There is even a show called “22 minutes”, the title referring to the amount of actual programming per half hour.

How long will it last? Probably only 4 maybe 5 billion years. When the sun enters the red giant phase of its life cycle and scours all trace of habitability from the face of the earth the ads will stop, unless you've used Wi-Fi then the ads will go on forever.

It's even bad in the free video-on-demand stuff (FIOS). I sometimes watch NCIS and when the show is recent it will run the full hour. As time goes on the commercials would get dropped and the run time would be about 43-44 minutes. I watched a couple old episodes yesterday that have now been padded with another 10 minutes of commercials for a run time of 55 minutes.

Do a search for something you like, and you’ll get ads for it. Hot cars, yachts, etc. Sadly, it doesn’t work for firearms.

I write marketing copy for a couple of websites, so I have to research their products. Add some novel-writing to that, and the advertisers pretty much implode every time I get near an ad-heavy site. (Last I checked, Farcebook thought I wanted to go scuba-diving in Oregon and then buy curtains on my way home.)

LOL. like waiving a giant steak in front of a pack of hungry dogs!

Last week, my wife and I were in the car, talking about a her friend’s 20 year-old son, who was needing some direction, and thinking of some kind of technical training to launch a career.

I suggested to my wife, he should train to be an electrical technician, high-power line repairman.

The next day, on my home computer, ads for an electrician/ lineman school in Georgia popped up on my computer.
