Those who have joined us in recent years have been spared something on this forum that was all too common for all too long: the dreaded “opus.” Sometimes shrill, sometimes plaintive, often quite lengthy, these were vanity posts explaining why the member was leaving FR. For the life of me I could never figure out why we were treated to these narcissistic rambles.
Well, today I am 20 years on Free Republic, and this is my “no-pus,” because I’m not going anywhere. Thank you to my brothers and sisters in the fight for liberty for keeping company for two decades.
I’ve mellowed over the years and in the course of making over 3,700 replies. I still have two pet peeves, though:
I’ve realized that it is unkind to criticize the grammar of others so I don’t do it anymore. However, one exception is the despicable practice of pluralizing word’s using apostrophe’s. I can’t imagine where this violence against grammar comes from. I still see red and pounce very time I see it.
The second, based on my decades in the law, is the widespread belief that lawsuits, particularly the “class action,” are magic wands that can banish one’s foes. To the contrary they are difficult, expensive, and very time consuming. Add in the many corrupt federal judges, and entertaining the litigation fantasy is just not a productive use of one’s time. Likewise the fantasy, often expressed here, that public officials and judges can or should be jailed for their decisions. Again one’s mental energies directed on that line are just a dead end.
So that’s my airing of grievances. But mostly I want to thank all of my FRiends, and especially Jim. Here’s to another 20 years
Oops!😆
This, a particular scam that effects transfer of wealth to the privileged class: the lawyer.
I explained to my son who was the recipient of a class action settlement: the lawyers have no legal standing in the particular grievance at issue. They advertise: you may be entitled to substantial compensation... and you may well be. The lawyers need agrieved clients that they can represent.
However, when the lawyers recover research expenses and legal fees, your substantial compensation is likely to be in the two of these figure range.
That was the case in my son's involvement; he got $15 and change. I have no idea how much the lawyers got... plus these cases can take a long time with challenges and appeals. sigh
As many foreigners with phones and some technical know how perceive: many Americans are saps that can be ensnared by a little greed stimulus.
{We older FReepers have left some historical marks! :^) }
I was a member earlier than that but under my real name, which I changed to this one around December of 1997.
