Mine never did climb trees either. I always put the metallic plastic ornaments on it tied with ribbon just to be safe.
Years ago, I had a link to a website where the cat servants would have yearly photos of their Christmas tree after they decorated it, and after the cats re-decorated it. Lost the link a long time ago, but maybe this video would be an acceptable substitute.
