‘Why did it take nine hours to go 130 miles in our new electric Porsche?’
The Guardian ^ | 28 Nov 2020 | Miles Brignall

Linda Barnes and her husband had to visit six charging stations as one after another they were either out of order, already had a queue or were the slow, older versions that would never be able to provide a fast enough charge in the time.

The couple, who love their new fully electric Porsche Taycan 4S, which has a range of about 250 miles, contacted the Guardian to describe how difficult it is to recharge a car away from home. Their journey would have taken two and a half hours in a conventional car, they say.

Linda says the sense of relief was enormous. “We ran through the entire gamut of emotions in those nine hours – resignation, range anxiety, annoyance and disbelief that this was happening – and finally elation when we realised we’d get home,” she says.

The Germans also made a tiny three-wheeled car - I saw one at a museum. Although I think it had two wheels in the front and one in the back. The car looked like a feather could topple it over.

I’ve been a supporter of fuel cells for transportation ever since I was a senior in college in the early 1970’s.

“they are faster than anything gas fueled”

Once, then off to the charging station, again.

They were probably wowing the peasants with the infamous electric golf kart acceleration, which repures immediate recharge to continue.

Do what celebrities do, they have a fleet of cars, Prius and Tesla for virtue signaling, and a bunch of sports cars and a Humvee for when they actually want to go somewhere.

At least Texas is talking about taxing electric vehicles.

Ohio has an extra $100 per year for a hybrid and $200 for electric or plug in hybrid.

Wow! $700+ for a new key!
I’m definitely going old school with my next vehicle. Possibly a Ford or Dodge step side truck.

You're thinking of the BMW Isetta, their first post-war car IIRC. Built and heavily modified on original Italian design

But it was a four wheeler, with the closely spaced rear drive wheels making it appear to be a three wheeler.

The reported range of these vehicles is suspect at best.

What is the real range for a car that has a four year old Lithium Battery system on a day that is 20 deg with the radio, heater, wipers, computer systems & on board electronics working full tilt?

I would imagine the 250 mile range is likely for a leisurely drive on the highway on a 70 deg day with neither the air conditioning or heater operating.

There are serious technological issues that will need to be addressed as well as serious infrastructure upgrades to our third World infrastructure in order for these vehicles to even be moderately successful.

BTW: With all the real car companies getting into electrics, it’s time to dump your Tesla stock before it falls to $30 a share.

When GM, Toyota, Ford & VW decide to take over the market Tesla will no longer be a niche company with cache. It will be a heavy debt laden company with no distribution, unable to manufacture & deliver the cars that are ordered in a timely fashion. If they survive it will likely be as a subsidiary of a much more healthy car company.

I can actually see a battery pack replacement during a pit stop in NASCAR.
