OK, a vanity post here - With Fox having completely gone to the dark side, and not wanting to spend any money to support any of the mainstream media any more, I'm looking for a streaming service that can replace my cable.
I'm looking to have local channels (which I can do with an antenna if necessary), some sports, alternative news, older movies, older shows, maybe some history.
I gave up TV about 10 years ago. its nice to be rid of TVs and what carrier, how and how much. I’m happier without.
I get Netflix and it suffices for when I really “want: tis watch something. I fill it in with YouTube watching certain people I like, even daily political shows. I watch cooking shows and any genre I want.
There are so many alternatives, it’s impossible to do them justice here.
Roku.
Then add YouTubeTV if you want all the normal channels.
Roku has tons of free content.
I gave up cable almost ten years ago now. It was a bit rough at first, but then the world opens up to you. It was a bit embarrassing to realize how much time I spent staring at that box on the wall.
There is a wealth of entertainment on radio. With the internet, you can stream all types of music, talk and information from all over the world. At no cost.
I second the FReeper above who mentioned books. A movie in your mind.
If you must sit in front of the television, there are many options of which I know nothing. I am still a DVD luddite.
Thanks, everyone that responded.
I didn’t mention - I have 2 Amazon fire sticks, which is what my TV/Internet provider uses for their TV service. Can’t complain about the quality of the signal, mostly HD/4K except where the old movie/show didn’t have it.
Anyway, if I can use that device for my service, I’m more than happy to do so. My internet is hugely fast - over 500 mbps down/350 up on wireless, and nearly a gig on wired connection. So no issues with streaming.
Also have Amazon prime, so I have some choices for entertainment when I want.
I like the options like Pluto TV which has NewsMax. I wouldn’t mind having some college sports, though with an antenna, I can get them from the 4 regular channels locally.

Yes. Roku stick. You can order whatever channels you want.
Use your antenna for local channels so you can tune in to 911-type major news events.
Other than that, use ONLY services available over the internet.
Netflix alone has more titles (both weekly serials and movies) than has ever been broadcast by traditional TV in history. Probably Prime Video too.
A buddy likes Sling a lot.

Or get livestream NEWSMAX via YouTube
BUMP! A large sanctuary where the Word of God is spoken and taught in its truth and purity is not a bad substitute.
“No, don’t get a Smart TV. Smart TVs spy on you and the quality (interface) is horrible.”
Nonsense.
I have a new Samsung 55” and have never enabled the voice port. And it doesn’t have a camera. No security worries.
As for quality, I can stream 4K programing on it PLUS the little 32” Panasonic in the bedroom...simultaneously.
All over wireless...no cables absent the electrical cable.
And I can surf the internet at the same time...again, wireless.
Thanks for the link...
And thanks again, all! I knew Freepers would be helpful.
Yes, as another freeper mentioned - ROKU. Lots of choices, and Pluto is free. We have plenty to watch. We also have Sling though it’s not free and it has Fox News, which we now are avoiding.
I tried Roku, but switched to an Amazon Fire TV box. Like it a lot.
Since we are Prime members, we get some stuff on Prime.
Have Hulu. Gives us plenty of live stations.
Have Pluto TV to get news max etc.
Plenty of other apps to access through the FireTV box.
Happy. Don’t miss Dish at all.
Digital antenna for locals - get a good one because the cheap ones don’t always get strong signals.
Streaming service like Sling works good (different services available too) and give a lot of the channels most of us watch on Cable.
OAN is available as a service for a few bucks a month so you get premium news that’s actual news if you want.
I have tried several and settled on Sling..... $30/mo with three simultaneous devices plus local channels.....
No contract and add-ons are (HBO etc) are reasonable....

And they have Fox News if you want it plus News Max
Streaming.
You’ll find you can get a lot of the content for free online.
Some offer packages to have a simpler interface but it’s the same content
Cut the cord.
