Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

What a welcome floof to come home to!

Good morning.

The laundry is done except for hanging, and for having a not-so-great night, I don’t feel too bad this morning.

Yesterday, I roasted one of the chickens from Lin’s and it turned out scrumptious! SO much better that the Walmart disaster. I was afraid to try and take it out of the roasting pan for fear it would fall apart. Very tasty!

It restored my confidence in my cooking abilities, which are almost as good as my mother’s. At least, they were at one time. :o]

How was your weekend? Did the weather agree with your weekend plans?

Good morning. I’m glad your chicken was a success!

We had a pleasant weekend. Not much went on. Choir, church, Patrick Driving Adventures. Tom came over yesterday to hang out. He trounced us all at Scrabble.

My Real Brother and his wife play Scrabble a lot and she beats him every time. All their married life! The best part of it is that he’s proud of her, and all I can say is that if it works, don’t change it.

I forgot it was even a game, it’s been so long since I played.

Tom is very good at it.

He and I went out last night about 6:45 looking for Shannon. We found her lurking at one of her other homes!

Good morning. Happy Monday.

I see I’m a bit ahead of the kitteh this morning.

Puppy had another seizure this weekend so now it’s time to see what causes them. It can’t be that we have one of 5% of dogs that have epilepsy, can it? I guess it can.

Good for Tom!

Some people seem to be naturals at Scrabble, but even though I won all the spelling bees I was ever in, producing words from tiles took a lot of practice. The adage, “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” comes into play.

Happy Monday morning!

I’m sorry to hear about a new seizure for Puppy. I hope its just part of her growing up and not a permanent condition, but of course, if you know what it is, it can be treated.

Prayers for all of you.

Sorry to hear about the puppy’s seizures. As ‘Face said, a diagnosis is a step toward treatment.

The sun is shining here. We’re going to the library in half an hour or so.

I think it’s most likely to be idiopathic epilepsy, although we’re looking into a possible low blood sugar since she doesn’t always eat in the morning. We’re encouraging her to eat. We’ll see if that does anything.

There’s also this new (to us) thing of not spaying a puppy until after she’s had her first heat. In the past we spayed our pups after 6 months. Apparently the estrogen changes could possibly trigger a seizure. If the neurologist says that’s a possible cause, we may spay her.

Back from the library. Our next thing will be the movie of “Henry IV, Part II.”

Unfortunately, dogs (and cats) can have hypoglycemia as well as diabetes, and as with humans, there is no age limit as to the onset of either. I hate to think of any animal having to endure either disease. Epilepsy isn’t a cut-and-dried disease in animals, either, so whatever it is, I hope it’s only temporary.

As for spaying, it was thought for years that waiting for a first heat was the best thing for dogs as well as cats, and then that changed to “there’s no medical reason why it shouldn’t be done before that.” By the early ‘90s, it was common practice to spay and neuter animals any time after they were three months old.

At the county animal shelter in Vegas, if puppies and kittens were brought in or born at the shelter, they were spayed or neutered before they were adopted or the new owners were given certificates for a free spay withing a three-month period.

I’m beginning to think the spay/neuter thing is an item of personal preference for the veterinarian.

The clothes are hanging to dry, the bed has been made and I changed the covering on the sofa, though I’m thinking of giving up the cover I just took off. It will take some consideration, though, because it’s the right size for a blanket for said sofa/futon. I think I’ll put it in the footlocker with other bedding for it, just because I’m not transporting an empty footlocker!

I need to get the handles for it though as there is no way to carry it, otherwise.

If the pain goes away a little more, I’ll pack up some small stuff. I took it off the shelves last week, but didn’t feel up to wrapping and boxing it, so it’s sitting in small crates, waiting for my body to cooperate.

Our vet thinks that if you spay a female before her growth plates are closed it could lead to hip problems later. We spayed 2 previous females and did not have that problem.

Back in the day a footlocker wasn’t just for transporting stuff. It was also a good stepping stool.

These days they’re not made quite so sturdy.
