Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

Posted on 10/20/2020 9:33:20 PM PDT by BenLurkin

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

W00t!

Igor always seemed to find ways to stay busy, but then he was that kinda guy. Even if all it meant doing was snooping.

I refused to call in for him when he didn’t want to go to work, though. If he wanted to play hooky it was on him.

I think it’s good for people to do their own jobs and not always be looking for help just because they’re bored or not industrious.

I’m out of yogurt, so I have to eat eggs for breakfast. It’s raining again. I put on Vlad’s shoes and went out for the WSJ.

The only roasting hen I could find on Tuesday was in the frozen section. I left it in the fridge, planning to cook it yesterday, but it was still solid. Slightly thawing now, but I would have done better to take it out of the fridge before I called it a night. Now, I’ll have to just slow roast it, and I really hate what that means — the innards are still there.

But I will go get it ready and put it in the oven. I wish someone would invent some disposable insulated gloves for handling frozen food.

I haven’t roasted a hen for several years.

It’s interesting. My F-I-L who served in the Navy during the Korean War (in Boston the whole time) wants me to claim all the veterans benefits. I manned a desk in Omaha, Nebraska, doing the same kind of thing I did when I got out. The biggest risk I faced was that some SP would get crazy with his or her gun, which was a highly unlikely scenario.

Veterans benefits, to me, are for those who went to where there could be trouble. Not for those of us who stayed comfortably here in the U.S.

I may never have roasted a hen.

Rainy Thorsday. Maybe we’ll watch the Henry IV movies today.

At the risk of causing a misunderstanding, you served, even though it was behind a desk, but you did it so someone else could be on the front lines. It’s not whether you were at risk or not. It’s that you served. “They also serve who only stand and wait.”

I was a military wife, mother, grandmother and widow, and though I wasn’t paid in dollars, I would have been entitled to all my husband’s benefits had I stayed married to him. Even though I didn’t “serve” those benefits would have allowed me to have a home.

So yes, you are entitled, yes, you did earn them, and yes, you should get them because your job allowed someone else to fight. </soapbox

I prefer my own roast hens to those rotisserie hens which seem to always be dried out, from the skin in. If you can get them when they come off the spit, they’re luscious, but most of the time they’re several hours old.

So the hen is smothered in mayo and seasoned and on a rack in the roaster, so it will be ready long about noon, at 250°, depending on how deep the frost is. I’ll check it around 1000.

I have to go to Walmart this morning and get a new SIM card. I could order one, but there is no guarantee it will work. At least if I get it in the store and it doesn’t work, I can take it back the same day.

Thank you, dear Lady.

My brother added up my family’s service times and histories: Going back to my grandfather in WWI and Nicaragua in the mid-20’s (and Chinese Yangtze river patrol boats in the 1930’s) , we’ve had 196 years of military time.

I can only thank you, once again. Being a military dependent for over 30 years gave me an insight on what it takes to “stand and wait.” And so, Rob’t, I appreciate your service! <3

That’s a lot more years than my paltry 30 years! Though my Dad was a drummer boy in the cavalry...when they were on horses...maybe I’ve got 32 years military service... ;o]

I might, but I would have to go find my discharge or my dog tags or something. I don’t normally carry evidence of my Cold War service with me.

We never did anything like that. My father’s father had his lungs damanged in WWI. My dad went to West Point and served his 3 years. His brothers also got their college education thanks to the various branches. I served 4 for ROTC.

I, too, thank you for your service.

Mayo, shudder.

Mayo just keeps the chicken moist, and doesn’t add a lot of flavor. It’s better if the hen is roasted breast side down, as the white meat is then a lot moister than otherwise. I usually add Italian herbs and sometimes, lemon-salt. Today, it has Italian herbs and garlic salt.

It will have a crispy skin and the meat will fall off the bones when it’s done...

I just made a wasted trip to Walmart. I didn’t want to pay S&H or wait a week, but Walmart won’t get SIM cards in until Monday or Tuesday “sometime.” So I ordered from Amazon and with luck, it will be here by Saturday. Unngh.

My nephew and his wife left me with a Christmas tree, and I think it’s because they didn’t want to mess with it since they would be living with his mom. So I took it. And offered it today for free, as long as my anonymity was maintained. I think it’s a done deal. I would like to have kept it, but I have no room to set it up here, even if I wasn’t moving.
