Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

That’s a strange cartoon, Nully! LOL! It’s like being smacked with some Maudlin Pixie Dust.

(That’s a great tagline!)

Off to Petsmart to get crickets for the World’s Most Boring Pet. Maybe the QT will have gas, too.

Poor puppy-dog. Ashamed to wear it, or just plain hates it. I wonder if a dog has ever successfully chewed it to pieces while they were still in it?

Hang in there! It’s only temporary.

I need to go get gas, as well, but not today. I don’t know if the Lawn Guy is coming, but I think I need to go cover the windshield, anyway, and bring in the doormat.

She doesn’t like it. The first time we put it on her (after the drugs wore off) she wouldn’t even move without being guided. We helped her lie down and she didn’t move all that night as far as we could tell.

Yep, that would be a good indication that she doesn’t like it. Or is afraid of it, which is also possible.

If there ever is a next time for the Cone of Shame, she will probably have the same reaction to it, bless her little doggie heart!

Gas was $3.29 at Sinclair and $3.59 at Exxon. Tourist season.

Google tells me it’s the altitude of Denver.

And how are you today?

I texted Tom to let him know he could buy gas. No line.

I’ll wait another week before I buy gas. I don’t go that many places, these days, mostly because the mileage is so horrendous.

But it’s good there is no line.

I had to vacuum oak-pollen debris from the camping gear boxes. The trees were really dropping them in Raleigh.

I was thinking this morning, as I bonked my knee on a corner of the trunk in the dark, that there will be so much ambient light from “beautiful downtown Cabot” that I won’t need all the nightlights I have — one in each room, including the bedroom. So why did I bonk my knee? I dunno, but I bonked it hard enough to make it bleed! So I put some colorless iodine on it, just to remind me of my childhood. ;o]

I’m very sorry about your bonk! We have quite a lot of ambient light here, even with the blinds.

Tom the Son has appeared, having bought a tank of gas. I finished sorting the camping supplies, and the next thing is Kathleen’s riding lesson.

There was a lot of ambient light in Vegas so the only place I really needed a nightlight was in the kitchen. There IS no ambient light here! What little there was when I moved in is no longer here because the security lights are all dying. Hurricane is only about 14,000 population, and we’re a few blocks from the main road, so it’s very dark. And management doesn’t want to pay to have the lights fixed. I guess they’re waiting for the first law suit.

OK. I’ll try to keep it in mind. My mind being what it is these days...

And nothing has been done since I sorted the pills, so altogether, today’s accomplishments have been getting up, going to Walmart, sorting pills and ... Looks like next thing on the list of things to do is bed. It seems so appealing, like a banana.

I did change the band aid on the knee bonk, because it was all “bleedy,” as one of my nieces used to say when she was a short little person.
