A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Good morning. Happy Tuesday!
Don’t look so sad, kitteh. Monday is over.
Crikey!
I’ll shut the door in a minute so the “cold” will stay in here most of the day. Who’s in charge of the actual Service, these days?
Back from Walmart. I feel like I forgot something. Maybe that’s because I have to start building my order for iHerb and it’s weighing on my mind.
I managed to sleep fairly well last night, but I still didn’t want to get up this morning. Saturday, I’ll start on the next phase of the schedule. That’s going to be hard, but at least I’ll be able to do it without the tea schedule in the mix.
Happy Twosday to you!
Is dog still loving the new place?
Vlad mows and James edges, in theory.
Vlad mowed, and I weeded in the front. Maybe tomorrow I’ll get more mulch, but I think it’s time for a shower and some educational torture for the youngsters.
I’m all for educational torture for the youngsters!
I’ll be heading out for some errands in a few minutes, but I should be back home within 30 minutes. Then tomorrow, I’m getting my hair cut, but I have to go early because Rocky is having the terminator in. I put down diatomaceous earth when I moved in and I’ve seldom been bothered with critters. Rocky, on the other hand...
So I promised I’d be back here by 0900 and expect the bug guy between then and 1100.
I’ve been cleaning up in the bedroom. I moved Hogwarts and the plastic drawers with Jake’s bed on top.
As far as I can tell she is. She loves to sit and look out the bedroom window. Or in the “living room space” the windowsill is actually low enough she can lie and rest her chin on it.
The landscape contractor came back with a quote of $10,000 for labor, and supplies would be probably another $4,000, so we decided we don’t want a new patio and a fire pit that much. We’ll just go on campouts and build campfires.
How’s the gas situation, TC?
As in gasoline. I know you have boys in the house.
Crikey. I’d be heading for Lowe’s or Home Depot and checking out some books and some expertise on DIY patio and fire pit. Favorite Son just put his in. Well, the Perfect Wife did most of the work, but she put down square pavers, they got a canopy with mosquito netting and the most work he did was to assemble the fire pit.
I commented Sunday that they still only had two chairs out there, and she said, no, two was all they would need — one for her and one for me because FS often works outside on his handyman jobs and doesn’t want to sit outside when he gets home.
So yah, for $14,000, I’d be seriesly looking at a DIY patio with fire pit. In fact, I think it would be cheaper to fly him down there, let him use his discounts at Lowe’s or Home Depot, put it in over a weekend and fly him back! ;o] He has been known to travel for work!
Sounds like a sweet setup for her!
I was telling my niece this morning that I might get a dog when I moved and the first thing she said was, “I still remember that pug you had!” She was three years old when we had that pug!!!
I’ll think about it...
Where did you move Hogwarts to? Does Dumbledore know?
Walgreen’s hadn’t figured out my prescription status, yet, so I left them to mull it over another day. It’s only been a week, so what was I thinking?
I moved it from under the window to the corner near the window.
Well, thanks to my doctor trying to anticipate me, the insurance company won’t authorize the morphine at the moment. Even though it’s been a week since the prescription was submitted.
So I don’t know how long I’ll have to wait. Probably another week and that’s going to present a massive amount of problems for me. I literally can’t get anything done without it, including sleep.
So we’ll see...
Now I need to go sort the pills I forgot to sort earlier because my schedule has thrown me off the memory chip. :o|
Or sopmething.
Unnghhh
Phooey on the doctor and the pharmacy and the insurance company.
I haven’t looked for gas. Others are reporting that there’s none available, but I’m just thinking this is an opportunity to not go places.
Phooey is right. I counted my “stash” and without the extra pills, I have enough for maybe 10 days. If I do any packing, and use what I’ve saved, I might make it through six days. Maybe. Nobody at this Walgreen’s follows up on stuff like this and I’m not used to that.
The pharmacist in Henderson was amazing and spoiled me. She was on top of this kind of thing like you can’t believe. She would have been on the phone to the insurance company like only a pharmacist can be. Here, it’s like we all can just wait because we live in Jerkwater and have nothing more pressing than walking across the street. But don’t get me started.
Well, I know why my Favorite Daughter hasn’t sent the money for her bake ware. She spent a hefty portion of it on stationery. Go, her! I’d like to afford to, but she was a very short person when I did it the last time. She’s got good taste, though. ;o]
I forgot to send out her birthday card today, so it will be very late getting to her. I can mail it tomorrow, but her birthday is Thursday, so it will be Friday at the soonest before she gets it.
I cleaned the bathroom this morning, and got the pills sorted but something wore me out. Errands, maybe? Or the stupidity I’ve encountered since I woke up?
I don’t need to hear that about gas when I’m contemplating a move of 1600 miles in the near future.
