A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I may have to wait for it to get warm to schedule a warming party.
At least it’s not snowing.
Makes me think of the line in that great YouTube clip from Star Trek Beyond where the girl in whiteface says, “I have the beats and the shouting” before she plays “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys.
As Kirk said, “That’s a good choice.”
Too much jocularity!
Fifty-four degrees and trying to rain, but not trying hard enough.
I’m waiting for the clouds to lift. They just seem to get thicker. Radar shows we’re in the middle of a very large patch of rain but the streets are dry.
It’s a very nice afternoon here. I’m doing advance prep on food for the campout; need to get back to the chicken.
We just got a letter from Joe Biden, saying he’s going to send us $12,600 because he loves us or something.
I’m sure I’ll hear from Biden also soon, but I’m also sure there won’t be quite that much money involved. So my first question is: Where is he getting it?
I’m still cold and I think I won’t be warming up this side of Cabot. At this rate, I won’t be breaking out my summer clothes.
I need to clean out the freezer again, so that may be what happens tomorrow, after Walmart. I also have to finish up the linen closet. Not sure what to do about the pantry. I’ll think about it a little longer.
He’s borrowing it from the future selves of people who are younger than he is.
That’s my money.
You’re welcome.
Today, Lego.com thinks they’ll ship my Diagon Alley set in early June.
I’m sure he’s taking some of it from SSA and the DOD...
Wow. You’ll be starting to put it together when I’m making last minute plans on the move!
What fun! (For both of us!)
Oh, it could be delayed again. Maybe I’ll get it for Christmas.
Morning Kitteh service will resume on Saturday.
Sweet kitty!
LOL! Well, that would be good, too! Packages any time are good, so a friend tells me!
Thank you. She wants to go outside now, please.
This morning’s Birman is a purrfect choice!
Good morning.
I awakened before the alarm went off, but it was just before 0200, so that’s OK, I guess. I managed to sleep fairly well, getting in about seven-and-a-half hours. Not great by my needs, but that’s probably because I took a nap yesterday morning.
Most of the laundry has been put away, and the list made for Walmart. It has been raining mostly “on” since yesterday afternoon, and will continue for most of the day. The farmers and ranchers have been praying for rain, so this is welcome. In looking at the map, its all going north of Vegas, so their weather will stay mild and dry. Just like Charlie likes it. (Ditto, me.)
I washed my winter coat yesterday, and I’m glad I did because I need it this morning as it’s 44° out. Adam the mail carrier said he liked the cool weather, and we laughed as I stood there in a hoodie, shivering, long-sleeved shirt underneath...
With any luck, I’ll be able to put some more things in boxes today. I think the box from iHerb that came yesterday is the perfect size for the few glass/ceramic containers I have yet to pack, so when I get home, I’ll try it. I also want to pack some photo frames. With luck, I can get about four or five boxes packed today.
“She wants to go outside now, please.”
I’m sure. Like all cats, if there’s a door in front of her she wants to be on the other side of it.
We often leave the back door open for the cats to go in and out, especially in the morning and evening.
Morning, all. Happy Monday Part Deux!
I had a fun treasure hunt this morning as Mrs. ArGee found new places for all the things I use for breakfast. I’m sure I’ll have another fun one tomorrow.
Much like the fun I’ll be having in a month or two...or three...
