A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Afternoon! After Mass, we had more choir practice (for next week), and when I got home, I fell asleep.
Also a laundry basket, because cats and laundry go together.
I’m fighting the nap thing for another hour.
If I had a kitteh, I would have lost two hours ago...
Looks like rain for tomorrow...folks have been praying for it, so I hope its more than a tease. I don’t mind it because I won’t shrink.
See ya tomorrow!
I never object to anyone’s telling me I look nice.
I was able to order the Diagon Alley Lego set today. It may come by mid-May, or it may linger on backorder for months, but at least the order is in.
Tomorrow, we will get ready for the campout on which we are leaving Tuesday.
It rained here on Saturday. Not a whole lot, but an appreciable amount.
“... cats and laundry go together.”
In our experience, SOME cats and laundry make more laundry, and thus natural consequence reaches certain children who are not diligent about putting their clean laundry away.
DP once left some running clothes on the floor, thinking he would wear them again, but the smell led Shannon to believe it was a substitute litter box.
Off to the laundry room, with an extra load again. This time, it is my winter coat and a couple of large towels.
Our chance of rain went from70+% yesterday to -5% this morning. :o[ We need the moisture.
Anyway, I’m off.
More comments, later...
Kitteh has the perfect reaction to my laundry room visit. If this is any indication of what the rest of the week will be like, I’ll stay home and mind my own business.
A clue would be this: Wet clothes are strewn about the apartment.
Another is: I need to get more quarters.
A third would be: It took me twice as long to do half as much.
Good morning. Or did I already say that, before things went south?
I’d like to go to Rooster Run and get myself a full breakfast of ham, bacon, sausage, eggs, hash browns, toast, grits and orange juice. Comfort foods all.
I need to go hang the shirts but the bed will have to wait.
It was nice of him to comment on how I looked, and it was an enormous boost to my ego. But I think he must have mistaken me for someone else! LOL!
Congratulations on ordering Diagon Alley Legos! I bet Lego never expected the Hogwarts theme to be so popular. At least not in America.
So how long will you be camping? I miss that. Some days, I wish I still had camping gear, “just-in-case,” but other days, I’m glad I don’t. I’d just have to find a place to store it. But I do miss being out in the woods.
We will leave before noon tomorrow and be home Friday afternoon. There will be a kitteh tomorrow morning, and then a couple of days’ hiatus.
Sorry to hear that the laundry went badly!
Good morning, everyone! Happy Monday.
I was AWOL Friday as I went to get a truck so the young(er) people I hired could load it with our heavier items and unload it at this end. We started sleeping here Friday night. Fortunately, we didn’t have any snow or rain on Friday.
Most of the rooms are set up, now for figuring out where to put stuff and getting some floor lamps.
Even a few days’ change is better than none! I hope its relaxing for you.
It’s Monday. Some days it goes like that. In another 18 hours, it will be a brand new day!
So when’s the house warming party? I’ll bring a family favorite, Glop...
Happy housewarming!
I’m glad the hard part of the move is over with!
Nully can bring the glop and I’ll bring the beserk. ;o])
I’ll bring the scads and lashings!
Party time!!
Been to Walmart, been to the library. Next, I’ll turn on Jonah Goldberg and chop vegetables until naptime.
I took a short nap, then got up and packed up the metal bakeware. I’m missing my 9”X13” cake pan. I think it got left behind when I baked something a few years back and took it somewhere. I’ve been using the blue one, but that’s on the way out of the state, as soon as FD sends the money.
There are several things that won’t fit into medium boxes and if I can’t find a large box at Walmart, I’ll have to donate them.
I’ve also decided I may leave the microwave cart behind. It’s not stable enough to hold as much as it’s been holding, even though I’ve tightened the screws on it several times since I got it. I think the big bookcase that Kate gave me will work much better.
I can get FS to find me another shelf for it, repaint it to match what I have in the kitchen and use it to hold the small appliances. One thing is sure — it won’t wobble!
