Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

It’s not realistic to expect a person’s apartment to be tidy when they’re packing to move!

Sally and Josh with the good teeth have arrived. Mom is making more French toast. Hope they’re done before the choir gets here.

It’s not only not realistic to expect it but rude to comment on it.

I just did more sorting. Sharon didn’t understand that sorting is also packing, in a sense. I just sorted perfumes and makeup, and about half of each will go over to the clubhouse. Not much, of course, but it all helps to lighten the load.

I might get the bakeware packed today. I’ve decided that FD will get the Anchor-Hocking in three packages and it will be SOON! I’m NOT taking it with me!

Why I thought certain things were necessary three years ago is beyond me. Or even five years ago. What I know now is that I’ve given away a utility van worth of things since I’ve been here that I brought with me, and the fact that I don’t miss them and can’t recall what most are is telling.

I can’t think of anyone I would make French toast for, these days, but that’s because I’m so aware that one child is diabetic and one is pre-diabetic. Both their dads had diabetes but I didn’t know about either in time to help their child. So French toast is off the menu. Much as I love it!

Choir is completed. Bill the Son has arrived. They’re going to play Scrabble. I’m cleaning the stove.

I sort of “packed” the glass bakeware for mailing. There were actually three boxes that were the perfect sizes if I divided up the the bakeware by the right pieces. I just sent FD a text to let her know how much it would cost, “approximately” because she offered to pay for it. Now I wonder how long I’ll have to wait for it.

Scrabble is a good game! One I’m a little better at than Monopoly. ;o]) It sounds like a fun visit, so that makes everything better!

How was choir practice?

Now, I’m going to the library. I’ll check back in a little later.

Choir practice went fine. We learned a new song without too much effort.

Igor and I joined a Stake Choir in Tucson once and we did an arrangement of “Poor Wayfaring Man Of Grief.” Never, in all my days of singing in choirs did I work hard enough to work up a sweat. This time was different. Every practice!

It was worth it, though. The choir was experienced and the Maestro (a rare thing in church choirs) composed the arrangement himself. Looking back, it was probably the most fun I ever had in a church choir!

Since then, almost all new songs are effortless to learn. At least, they were. Don’t know what they will be like, once I get to a Ward where I will stay...

Some songs are a lot of effort, but others have simple chord progressions and do what you expect them to.

Anoreth came by but couldn’t stop long because needing to shop and do homework before going to work.

Exactly. I don’t know that much about music, not having studied it beyond junior high, even though I did sing in a lot of choirs from the time I was 12 on. Like everything else, if you don’t use it, you lose it! (I think that’s even an admonition in the Bible!)

Lately, (the last ten or so years) I’ve been in Wards where there were no choirs. Which is pretty sad, whey you know the Lord loves to hear hymns!

That’s too bad about Anoreth’s time constraints. This is a good time of year to visit.

Welp, I’m outta here for now. I may be back later this evening, but I’m beginning to feel very tired.

Have a very nice evening!

I took a nap with Jake. Meanwhile, Tom turned up and Sally made cookies.

I just signed Kathleen up to go to Vet Camp at our vet’s office in August. It’s just one afternoon, but it will be fun for her.

I got up so I could stay awake, and of course, checked my email. Part of my iHerb order came. No knock, no doorbell.

*sheesh*

I don’t like being on the Tea Cycle because I have to leave an hour either side of the dose with no food. Sometimes, I just want a single Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Kiss to keep me going to the next snack. (So I don’t get hungry and overeat!)

Naps are good, unless they keep one from sleeping at night! I really want a kitteh to nap with and then I wouldn’t care about not sleeping at night. The kitteh could help with that, too!

The Vet Camp sounds like a fun deal for Kathleen. :o]

Mmmm...cookies!!! If I’m going to make some I need to do it ASAP, while the cookie sheets are still unpacked.

So, now, another chapter in “Tent Life In Siberia.” So much easier to “follow” their progress with a map handy. I almost wish I had a Cyrillic alphabet handy so I could ready the Russian side of the map.

Does your mother go back today? It sounds as if she’s had a nice visit.

My balance has been really wonky the last week, and I think it’s because of a sinus/ear infection, no doubt brought on by allergies. It’s difficult to do things like bending and reaching (packing) when one has a tendency to fall in any given direction with no notice whatsoever.

Changing my schedule is playing havoc with this Tea Cycle. At least, in my head it is. It will owrk itself out, I’m sure, given a little more time.

Sundays, now...by the time I have my shower, it seems like it’s already time to get ready for church! Next year, I’ll be in a new Ward in a new state and since there are only two wards in that building, I can always go at 0900. When my FS’s ward meets at 1100, his son will be going to the 0900 so I’ll still have someone to go with! ;o]

I hate feeling hurried on Sundays...

You can use tea-tree oil in your ear and/or chew garlic for your sinuses.

My mom left about half an hour ago. She’s going to visit my cousin in Pinehurst next. That’s about a three hour drive; she’ll be there by naptime.

It was a nice visit. No arguments!

Any visit that ends with no arguments during it, is an excellent visit!

I might try both remedies when I get back from church. I took some colloidal silver with my last dose of pills and will take some with the next dose, as well, which is due when I get back from church.

It’s overcast again, and the barometer is dropping. Admiral Fitz hasn’t changed in a week, but that one, I watch almost as closely as I do the barometer. Either way, it will be a dismal-looking Sunday.

But I’m ready for it!

I was all over the bed last night to the point that the cover was all skewampus. I never know how bad it is until I go in to make it, as I don’t turn any lights on in the bedroom until after I’m dressed. I always lay my clothes out the night before.

Anyway, I’m outta here in a few minutes, so later!

It was a nice service. The bishop and the stake president were the only speakers, as part of the service was taken up sustaining the officers that are already in place, from the President of the Church on down to the ward level. (We do this once a year on each level of authority.)

The bishop has quite a stash of masks and today’s had a Cheshire Cat grin on a black background. Pretty funny.

I was told twice how nice I looked. By the same person. The second time, he said, “I can’t get over how really nice you look today!” Considering he’s seen me a total of exactly two times, I have to give him extra points for trying!

He mentioned his daughter who was sitting in the back, and he said he had told her he wouldn’t mention her, so “this is me, not mentioning my daughter.” :o]) Ya gotta love a guy with a sense of humor!

Our old bishop was there, and it’s the first time I’ve seen him since he was released over a year ago. His wife has MS and is doing very poorly, and he is the sole caregiver for her and his disabled son. He looked old, like the strain was wearing him out, but he hasn’t been able to attend church for a long time, so he’s allowed to look like the strain was heavy on him.

The church was pretty full, for a change. It’s cool out, but the sun is out and the wind is blowing. It’s a nice Sunday!
