A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

You’re back! Mom arrived safely, although she got lost when she got to Charlotte. We played Monopoly. It was agreed, when dinner arrived, that she and I were roughly tied for winner.
Sally came by. She was wearing her Zion National Park shirt and said she likes it very much. Tom came by. It’s his first day of unemployment. They’re playing cards. Mom is fading ... she’ll go to bed soon. She said she’ll sleep in the bunk tonight, and if she hits her head, we’ll shuffle tomorrow.
Yes, I was back, for a minute. I got up so I wouldn’t fall asleep right away and sabotage myself in trying to implement a new schedule. It was enough, and I managed to hang in there for another 90 minutes.
I’m glad Sally likes her shirt! They’re scarce as frog hair, now, being available only in S and S. They have T-shirts, long and short sleeved, but I have one of each. Funny. I lived in Vegas for thirty years and all I have is a pink Las Vegas hoodie (that finally fits again) and a pink glittery lanyard, for the gaudy side of me.
Your mother and I at least have something in common — getting lost. I’m glad she had a pleasant evening, and I hope she didn’t hit her head!
I’m going to go take a shower and then see what kind of trouble I can get into. Sharon is coming by this morning so I have to make room for her to sit.
Good morning. I will shower today. Vlad turned up, saying he had a stomach ache. He got a Tums, gave Shannon her thyroid pill, and went back to bed. Shannon hates us all today.
Good morning!
The shower is done, and I’ve already begun to move things aside in honor of Sharon’s visit, though I don’t know why I bother. It will never be clean or neat enough to suit her.
So, now I need to turn my hand to the business of writing to Charlie. My hands are so stiff and clumsy in the morning, I almost hate them. But that would be unkind to appendages that have served me so well in so many things.
Shannons just gotta Shannon!
Mom is having a shower. I’ll get one later. It was in the 30s this morning, ice on the roofs. The cold makes my ankle ache.
I’m sorry about your cold ankle. It’s in the low 50s here.
Showers feel good whenever you take them!
Good morning OldTax-lady!
Charlie’s letter is waiting to be picked up and I’m waiting for Sharon. It will probably be another hour before she shows up. Or longer.
No kitteh, today? :o[
Post 4,982.
Mom made French toast for breakfast. It’s a tradition. Now they’re playing Monopoly again.
Whoa. How did I miss that? I thought I scrolled and I know I refreshed from the ping page, but I still missed it... I think it’s going to be one of “Those” days.
After Sharon leaves, I’ll go to Ace Hardware and get a couple of keys made for Chuck.
Then I’ll try to get something done here. If not today, then tomorrow.
I’ve decided to send the bake ware to FD in several shipments, mostly because I need to be able to lift it! The question is whether to send it USPS or UPS. I don’t know which one would be the cheapest.
Since I couldn’t find any large boxes at Walmart, I may just get a couple of storage tubs, instead. If nothing else, FS can use them or, if all else fails, store them in his storage shed. They won’t go to waste, for sure.
I can’t remember the last time I had French toast. I think it was sometime during the last visit of the late Dowager, a person I still miss. I made it for her, if memory serves me.
We have it only when Mom visits, although Bill used to make it for himself sometimes when he was living at home. I suppose he still does.
I love the stuff, but I need to be careful in case my pancreas decides not to work.
Sharon is here, so later...
*tagline*
Look at the beautiful opal eyes on the morning floof!
Good morning!
Kittehs are welcome! It was a rough night. I will not give in or give up. Unngh.
What’s on the docket for today? More Monopoly? I haven’t played that game in a bazillion years, so I’m sure I’d be in the first round of losers.
Good morning. Sorry you had a bad night. Maybe tomorrow will be better!
We have choir this morning. Later, the Uptown Children are coming to get Grandmama and take her out to lunch. Maybe she’ll get to see their apartments and pets, too.
Grandmama needs to see the pets who rule over the Uptown Children. It will do them all good to be in the presence of Royalty.
I did manage to sleep an extra half hour, but it doesn’t seem to have helped much, especially because I wanted to hit the ground running this morning. Maybe, after my second pain pill has had time to work I might get something done. There are little piles of things that have been sorted that need to be packed but I’m torn between that and packing books so I can put smaller boxes on the book shelves and make more room for stacking other boxes in front of them. It’s this kind of thinking that has a tendency to overwhelm me to the point that nothing gets done.
I think today is the day I will go to the library, just to give my mind a break. Sharon was no help at all. She can see nothing but a pile of mess and that kind of thinking isn’t good for me to contemplate for too long.
We need to move!
Please?
