Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

How is Elen, USMC, doing? Isn’t she about due for rotation? Or maybe it hasn’t been two years...

She’s doing fine other than boredom, last we heard. I think she expects another year in Okinawa, but she also mentioned a temporary gig in the U.S.

Sounds right. I should send her a bat card.

Getting mail is nice, when it’s not bills.

Off on an outing to get the van inspected again because it’s been too long and I didn’t get the registration renewed. Also take the chopped onions to the guy from Cub Scouts.

I need to write more. Since my FS and his PW don’t read my letters, I need to find a substitute pen pal.

Today was going to be a day of resting on my laurels, but I finished packing the box with small appliances by tucking some padding inside and taping it shut, then labeling it. And reminded me I was going to sit out today!

But now, I need to go get some honey for my poor allergies. Then I’ll come home and sit out the day!

Success on my outing, and then I also negotiated the DMV’s website and paid my bill. Jerks.

Kathleen and I walked over to Food Lion during the inspection and bought cat sand and 2-for-1 frozen pizza rolls.

OldTax-lady phoned from South Carolina. She says we can expect her 2-ish to 3-ish, depending on traffic and how often she stops.

Well. That was a fruitful outing. No pun intended.

I had to wait about 10 minutes for Casey to get done with another customer, and while I was waiting, I saw one mechanic working on a truck, one on the phone, and Casey in a vehicle outside with a phone in one hand, test equipment in the other hand and passing messages periodically to the owner of the vehicle. It’s OK, though. He uses the same care with all his customers as he does me.

He is literally out of honey, so he brought me two quarts of different honey from his own private stash — one is wildflower honey, which may have been a good one but the other one is very dark and tastes like peaches. I don’t recall what he called it, but he made it clear that it was a sacrifice! I bought the dark stuff.

So I’ll have some with lunch. Maybe I’ll mix it with butter and used it on bread, since I packed the toaster. :o|

Congratulations on being legal again!

I keep thinking I want a pizza delivered, but since I just paid for the honey, the pizza is now in the “Luxury” class and just moved down one slot on the list.

I’m jealous of OldTax-lady, now, driving. It just makes me anxious to get the truck loaded up and hit the road. SO excited for that!!

Pizza is rarely as good as one imagines it will be. When we have our vacation, we can go somewhere with a wood-fired pizza oven.

We can do lots of things when we have our vacation! (So many reasons to get where I’m going!)

I never even new there was such a thing as pizza until I was 16, and I think my kids were in school before I ever had it again. Me? I love a Meat-Lover’s pizza!

There is a Little Caesar’s Pizza two blocks from here and a Domino’s Pizza about two blocks from that. Otherwise, I’d have to get frozen or Walmart. Maybe I’ll put it on the list for next week’s groceries.

I used to pick up from Little Caesar’s often enough that I had their number saved.

I’ve never been in either store, though we (Charlie and the Gang) did order from Little Caesar’s fairly often, but I was the only one with a vehicle so I often preferred Pizza Hut!

I would walk in to pick it up because the van is too big for drive-through.

Another reason to order from Pizza Hut — We would usually pool together enough money for three or four pizzas plus wings and whatever dessert was popular at the time as well as all the extra dipping sauces and other seasonings. Usually there were two of the pizza bags and sometimes, three.

Charlie said there isn’t even a real roof on the gazebo, now, so no one sits out there to visit. I don’t think I’d want to live there, now...

I suddenly have a picture of Adam West telling Burt Ward, “Quick, Robin, we need to send her a bat card.”
