Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

she told him to get more exercise and eat less pasta!

Why?

So you'll live longer.

So I can have more years of exercising and not eating pasta???

I agree with OldTax-lady. But I have a strong constitution and a week mind, so I should be OK. ;o]

It was, reportedly, 70° yesterday, but the wind was up again, so I can’t swear to it.

It’s supposed to be mostly sunny today. At least it’s beginning to shine into the living room when it comes up over the mesa!

Yes, it is Friday Eve once again.

But because I’ve been retired for a lot of years, days don’t mean much. Sundays and Other Days!

Less pasta, not no pasta. Less pizza, not no pizza. It is possible to eat one or two servings rather than four or five, I keep telling various young boys.

Jake will enjoy the sun in his window-bed for a while. I need to take some food for the homeless mission over to a friends house later, and Vlad wants to go to Your Local Game Store.

Some people think if there is food still in the serving dishes, it is their duty to consume it so that it doesn’t go to waste.

I’ve learned that some things taste better if they’re set aside for later, and that includes almost all things with tomato sauce.

The State of Nevaduh, in its infinite wizdumb has determined that gabapentin is now a controlled substance...

Are they still calling it a Tomahawk, or is that somehow demeaning to people who have a great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparent who was here when Chrithy Columbuth found a couple islands off the east coast of the Americas?

It’s not just Nevahduh. It’s Utah as well. I’ve had to submit my ID each time I get a refill, and have had to for the last year.

Go figger.

Well, with the dosage I’m on, it would take a very awful lot of a cartload to get the desired result — 3 mg.

When one young boy is at the table, one or two slices of pizza might end the state of "hungry" for a while, but when 2 or more young boys are at the table there is more to consider:

It always amazes me to see the choices a state gubmint will make in its infinite wizdumb.

People can be trusted to throw all their money away at a craps table if they want to, we don’t need to worry about that.

People can’t be trusted to evaluate the drugs they want to take after discussing it with their doctor or pharmacist. We must take action!

Yes, they all act like this could be their last meal before all food ceases forever.

Back from the DMV, where James got his ID card, while I had to wait on the doorstep in the pleasant sunshine. Good gravy. When Pat got his license in January, I was allowed to go in and sit in a chair, but that was a different office.

An old lady waiting to be invited in said the governor has waived the road-sign test because then people would be in the office too long and that wasn’t safe.

Good gravy.

I dunno. The Brits did an experiment years ago, with patients who needed morphine. The chose people who were in constant pain, at various ages and walks of life, and gave them all a morphine pump.

They were sure everyone was going to OD in the first month, but as it turned out, their morphine usage was down compared to what it was when they had to keep getting their prescriptions refilled.

There are patches, now, but as I was researching the alternatives to morphine, the side-effects were too risky for me to even try, what with CFIDS and all. I was hoping otherwise.
