Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

W00t!

Well, the pills have been sorted, the sleep shirts have been folded and put away, the bed has been made, the trash taken out, I’ve picked up yesterday’s mail, and I’m going to listen to an uplifting talk before I have to leave for Walmart in about 90 minutes. I’m tired already but it’s going to be a very long day. I have an appointment this evening. It will take me longer to get ready than the appointment will last, but ohwell! ;o]

Unnngh. I hope it all works out!

James are having a whiny fuss this morning because they’re not allowed to play computer games all day and do nothing useful. Oh, and getting out of bed ... totally abusive expectation!

Good morning. Happy Tuesday.

The puppy does NOT like wearing diapers. But she’s stoic.

Pet diapering is not something we have ever done.

Happy Trash Day to you!

James are a tad bit on the whiny dawdle side unless there is real incentive.

I found book boxes at Home Depot, but they only sell them in bundles of five boxes, at five bundles an order. I’m still waiting for a refund from U-Haul so I can actually do something to expedite the packing of the books, since I’m the one that has to schlepp them around until moving day.

I don’t know of any puppy that likes diapers. In fact, I don’t know too many human puppies that like diapers, especially when they’re wet or messy. It’s only temporary. Poor embarrassed thing.

I tried accessing the library on my tablet, but it seems I’m faced with the same problem as before. I’m wondering now if it my be the router that is at fault.

At any rate, one of the gals at the library was very short with me again today, and I don’t really know what her problem is. Whatever, it’s definitely something about me. Next week, when I take this DVD back, I’ll give her a thank you card to let her know I really do appreciate her.

Coals of fire and all that.

Kathleen and I went over to a friend’s house this morning, and we’ll be leaving soon for her riding lesson. It’s somewhat but not terribly cold today. Bill the Cardinal is whooping in the tree in the back yard.

I hope Kathleen enjoys her riding lesson, and that it’s not too terribly cold!

Here's me with a visual of someone standing on a tablet knocking on the library door and being denied entrance.

About 50 and damp. Kathleen is more comfortable than I am.

Yeah, may as well have been. It’s almost as if someone has deleted my membership, though it does show up on their computers. I have no clue what’s going on.

Kids don’t feel the cold and damp like we do. I used to go outside barefoot in snow. It never bothered me.

Now? No thanks. The older I get, the less I like the cold.

My head feels all stuffed with too much Jell-O or something. It’s not really a headache, but it’s not NOT a headache. In a little while, I’ll heat up the bathroom so I can take a shower and maybe the shower will help with the symptoms of whatever this is.

My day is going to end only a few hours later than it normally does, but it won’t be as relaxing until I get home. I can’t take the sleep supplements until just before I leave or I’ll fall asleep in the middle of the appointment.

But it’s what happens when the clergy is all volunteer, so I try not to make a fuss. I mean, they’re spending their evenings away from their families, so I need to respect that.

I hope it works out very well for you and the other party. I have two meetings tomorrow evening, but they’re on Zoom.

DP is going out to the wine bar. I’m planning on an early bedtime, but I hope he has a nice time. He hasn’t been out much today.

The last time I had an evening interview, it was on Zoom, and I learned that my laptop won’t let the other person see me. So this time, I decided to make it easier for both of us.

Good morning!

It was a nice meeting and one I’ll repeat in six months, but probably not with this person. ;o]
