Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

It gets truly annoying because brokers and dispatchers know we don’t have onsite parking and we are by appointment only.
They keep insisting on telling the drivers we have parking and are “24/7 first come first serve” which isn’t true.
We had parking 5 years back, but idiots messed that up by damaging things via being absolute retards.
It doesn’t take that much effort to NOT rin things over in a driveway with a truck, but they managed to do so repeatedly.

Glad you liked the bat card. I went to Walmart with Vlad. He’s going to make tuna casserole for supper. I’m going out to pull some weeds, as it is nearly warm here. And sunny!

Will you be planting anything this year?

It was nice out. I saw an ambulance come in with flashing lights and never saw it leave. I stepped out to see if it was still here and my ears were blasted by some atrocious rock (?) music from across the road behind us. Someone is evidently cleaning or otherwise preparing a duplex for rent. And no ambulance.

I always love the bat cards. Or any of the other ones you send by the talented Ms Dahms. I’ve kept them all.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the sunshine and nearly warmth.

I’m headed for the blanket show.

Yes, I remember some of your tales of the non-drivers, mis-parking and general mayhem of your place of employment. Others may get tired of hearing about it, but I don’t!

I’m sure most of the miscreants believe they’re the “exception to the rule,” and therefore, you/owners/managers won’t mind them breaking a few rules once in a while!

Hang in there, and remember, there’s always someone here in the wee, small hours, waiting for the next installment on one of your journal entries. You know, the ones you try to pass off as sic-fi, third-person? ;o])

Had another driver read the “Truck exit ONLY” and pull in anyway despite seeing teh sign and seeing me waving a RED light.
I admit, I lost it on the guy.
It’s snowy, snow removal is still working, and he’s giggling and smirking while pulling into an “Exit ONLY”.
“You see a sign that says Exit ONLY and yet you pull in? In what reality does that make sense? Also, a RED LIGHT means what? Means STOP.”
He goes “I’m just turning around”
“I am NOT allowed to let you in to turn around! Also, the driveway bottlenecks, it is severely unpleasant to back out of or into. You’re better off heading to the next road down and turning around there. The place you’re looking for has a GIANT GREEN sign out front, you can’t possibly miss it. It is across the street from us on the MAIN DRAG. This ain’t it. Now, GET OUT.”

If they should see an orthodontist, then they should very well see one.

Can you just go to a zoo or something and see one? Are the orthodontist zoos open during COVID?

I dunno. I might have trouble. OTOH, if I went to CDL school I might get the hang of it.

I have wondered if driving a motor coach from NYC up to a gambling community hereabouts would be a good “retirement” job. Those things look really fun to drive, and lots of older folks drive motor homes that are essentially the same chassis so it can’t be too hard.

Trust me, some of what is driving 90k pound death machines out on the roads are incapable of figuring out simple things like “No trucks means I shouldn’t pull in there”.
I’m sure you have a better grasp of vehicle nav than these guys do in your sleep.

The floof has the right idea, though.

The boxes have been returned to U-Haul. *sigh* Now I’m going to go drown my sorrows...watch them go down the drain...

Be back soon. :o|

Morning TC,
Kittie’s got the right idea.
Capture an innocent teddy and a Hooman will appear to rescue it.

Good morning or night. Things are functioning here to some extent.

I’m taking the James to the doctor this morning for their checkup, tetanus shot, and whatever. Hopefully it won’t take too long. We’ll drop some books off at the library we’re not allowed to go into because it’s not safe. GAH.

Actually, no trucks means average, ordinary people shouldn't pull in there. If they really wanted no trucks, there wouldn't be an opening.

Happy Wednesday.

I wish I had a teddy bear like that.
