Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Good afternoon, good evening, good night as the case may be.

We have snow.

I don’t know how long we’ll have a break from rain, but every little bit helps.

Kitteh hearts dat caow!

Good morning, finally.

I have no clue where my boxes are. I’ve contacted U-Haul AND FedEx but nobody know NUTHIN’. U-Haul’s fault.

The pill are sorted, the grocery list is done (I think) and I’m about ready to go. Another 45 minutes and I’ll be out the door.

Usually, I can go back to sleep if I have too many liquids. But if I wake up in pain, that’s something else again. Then I have to get up and take something for pain and eat a snack with it. At that point, going back to sleep depends on if I took enough of whatever to relax the muscles around the hurtful joints, or if I have to stay up and live with it for the next two to three hours.

Unngh...

I hope it’s a successful trip. They’ll have to resend you the boxes, the turkeys.

We have sun. Jake has gone to bed to wait for it to hit him. Shannon hates us.

Happy Tuesday. We somehow managed to survive Monday.

I think we got 3-4 inches of snow yesterday. I decided to move the vehicles late last night into one of the cleared spaces so we don’t have to move them this morning.

In the new apartment we will have a one-car garage so we will only have to move the other one. That will be nice.

I’m back.

This is Senior Day at Walmart, but I stood out in the cold, waiting for the doors to open until almost quarter after, because someone forgot it’s Tuesday. At least I didn’t miss my turn on the way home because of the poorly lit streets. It was light enough to see the intersection.

That burned valve sure is making the gas mileage drop. I think it’s about 17 miles to the gallon, now, but it was 29 when I first got it, seven years ago next month.

I’m still trying to track down the boxes. They left Kansas City KS yesterday, so with luck and slow going, there may be time to make the necessary corrections so that the boxes come here. The FedEx site is next to useless for residential customers. Don’t get me started on U-Haul because it’s the only game in town, and I don’t dare bad-mouth it. Yet.

Thanks! That’s good to know. I bought these from U-Haul because they will buy them back when I get done with them. Full price. :o])

“The weather is bad, that means I can park here!”
Idiot truck drivers x3 blocking my truck entrance last night during snow removal.
And we have no onsite parking.

The slightest excuse is sufficient for most people to act like selfish idiots.

I think they are looking to Nancy Pelosi as an example.

Oh, wait, did I say that out loud?

Hi again! Back from the dentist, James and James and I. I need a filling. James need to see an orthodontist. They say they don’t want to see the orthodontist, and I said it’s non-optional, but James will have to agree to any action beyond the initial consultation, since they will be 18 in less than a year.

It sounds like James and James are as feisty as ever! But I agree: If they should see an orthodontist, then they should very well see one.

Favorite Son was in braces for three years, but it wouldn’t have been quite so long had we not moved around so much. The last time we moved, he opted to have the braces removed. He was 16 at the time, but we felt he was capable of making the decision on his own.

He and Favorite Daughter have the same jaw structure but opposite problems. Same face shape, as well. Pretty odd when you realize one was adopted. :o])

By the way, I was tickled pink to get a bat card! (I love those bat cards!) I have a frog card to send, but I’ve been saving it. However, it will go out this week.

We saw a lot of that in Vegas, but not so much of it, here.

I catch myself thinking things like What You Said out loud. Not nice in company!
