Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Some boys just showed up thinking it was lunchtime already. Others have appeared looking for breakfast.

I put in some time on the treadmill, and next, I’ll take a shower.

Sorry about your clock! I need to reset my watch.

Funny but this morning, I was thinking about my own boy, starving, as usual, and his sister, even more starving!

If I had a bicycle, I might try to ride it several times a week. Lin’s is about a mile away and an easy bike ride, though slightly uphill. What fun!

I’ve been looking for clocks online but I haven’t found one I really like in the price I want to pay. I did find one, but I need to wait a few days before I decide. Most of the clocks in my house set themselves, but for the one that just died, the one in the bathroom and the one in the kitchen. And my wrist watch.

Your next tasks are always so immediate, and practical.

My next task are on the order of, “I need to re-think my life.”

I did finally nuke my Facebook profile so maybe that will help.

Yes, “immediate and practical” is the focus here. “What can I do right now to beat back entropy for a few more hours?”

Sometimes it’s “take a nap with a cat.”

Ah, Entropy. I see.

As the folks used to say, “Oh, THAT.
It’s been through here.”

Tom the Son came over and played Wingspan again. I won. Vlad hasn’t won yet, and he’s getting irritated. Tom has the highest score of the family (from the previous game, which he won). Kathleen has defeated Frank a couple of times. I don’t think he’s a strategic thinker. She’s not, either, but she’s so random that sometimes success lands on her out of the blue.

I’m getting closer and closer to nuking my Facebook account. I just have to convince my family members that FB is NOT the forum for conservatives. Of course, when I leave, I’ll leave a liberal niece and nephew behind. Both of them support BLM, so no loss there... ;o]

As I read it, this won’t be the only time I’ll leave a bunch of whiny leftists behind.

Whiny leftists are the scourge of society. Like a boil on the armpit of the world, though my opinion is much lower than that. ;o]

Yes, invisibility facilitates naps no matter where one is.

Good morning.

The laundry is done, but when I got back from the laundry room, the laptop wouldn’t load so I had to reboot. Unngh. Then I got lost somewhere, and finally, here I am.

I will finish paying my bills today. That deserves a double UNNGH.

Some of the supplements came on Saturday, but I’m still waiting for others. I don’t think I like not being in control.

I’m sorry, that’s not something I’m familiar with. My knee hurts ever since I was running with the puppy and had to dodge her quickly. But it doesn’t radiate anywhere.

I hope it resolves itself soon.

It’s Monday again. Happy Monday.

We had some snow on Friday. A little more today. Neither lasted long on the ground.

I guess it’s winter.

Happy Monday. Snow, unnngh.

It’s in the 30s this morning, but sunny. Catz are waiting for things to warm up.

Thanks. It’s distracting and debilitating but it is what it is and I’ll try to make it a non-issue as soon as possible.

But I do appreciate your input. Maybe I should run with a puppy... ;o]

It’s in the 50s here, but at least its beginning to get light.

No snow is forecast.

I have some calls to make and I hate making them on Monday. Cannot be avoided.

I need to clean the cages. Then my Monday jobs will be done, since the clothes are hanging to dry. UNNGH.
