Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Our temp has gone up to a whopping 35° and the sun is actually shining. But it won’t last. Ugly stuff is in the forecast.

It will be a cold day in heck before I ever read any Leftist propaganda to my greats or my great-greats. Of course, the way things are going, none of us will have to worry about it for the rest of our lives. The Leftists will all be gone in a *poof!*

Yes, that’s the mongoose story. The crocodile story is called “The Undertakers” and involves a 24-foot, man-eating crocodile.

I’m thinking of that day in the future when Rikki-tikki-tavi isn’t even available. Leftist propaganda is all you can get.

If that ever proves to be the case, not only will it be short-lived, but I will then tell stories from memory, or make them up like my mother did! ;o]

Kitteh sez da morning is FINE!

Good morning.

This should make the national news: I slept nine hours straight last night. I woke up enough to roll over once, and then it was lights out, again. That’s gotta be a 20-year record!

The shower has been had and in a while, after I’ve had my morning uplift, I’m going work on paperwork until I’m finished with it. I’ve been putting it off, but now, I can’t any longer. If it doesn’t take me too long, and if I still have any energy left, I’ll work on the last closet and see if there is anything in there that can be donated.

I’m determined to get through this moving preparation.

Good morning! Congratulations on sleeping!

My alarm went off. I’ve done all the pet care and dishes, and now I’m going for prayers. See you in a bit.

Thanks! I think my body and mind finally accepted your prayer for my good night’s rest!

It would be nice if I felt refreshed, but I will do what I can today, anyway.

I can’t believe it’s only Wednesday.

Oh, well. Happy Wednesday, everyone.

It looks like we got 2-3 inches of snow, all totaled. It is still falling lightly.

Good Wednesday morning!

The snow somewhat melted yesterday, but the day was never warm enough for it to go away completely. The foothills were absolutely gorgeous on my way home from Walmart, but I didn’t stop to take any photos. I should have, I think!

I don’t know what our total was here in the valley, maybe only 2” max in most places, but Pine Valley Mountain probably got a good 8” - 10”. If I step outside today, I may be able to tell.

Some snow is predicted in North Carolina, but not on my head.

It will be cold, though. I’m always cold these days.

...I’m always cold these days.

I know the feeling. I've been cold since the night of January 20 1969.

I hope you warm up sooner than I have!

The file drawer is weeded out. Now I need to file the current receipts and I’ll be ready for the move, though it’s still debatable whether or not this file cabinet is going to make the move with me. We’ll see...

I expect to be warm in the summer, especially at Webelos Adventure Camp.

I just mixed up the last of the self-rising cornmeal mix, and we’ll eat the result (when it’s baked) with leftover chili for lunch. Next time we want cornbread, it will be the real thing.

James went upstairs and came back complaining that it was cold, so I sent him back to make sure all the windows are firmly closed and latched.

I just got back from visiting Casey, and as we had discussed before, his consensus is that the truck is well and truly headed for the junk yard. I’m going to take it to him in the morning and then he will bring me home. During the day, he’ll check it out.

I told him the most expense I was willing to pay for would be an oil change (almost due, anyway) and new spark plugs. Just whatever it takes (within reason) to keep it on the road for the next three-to-six months.

He was very sweet and said he would in the meantime (3-6 months,) be looking for something else for me to drive. I thought that was kind of him.
