A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I got at far as putting the sheets on the bed and had to quit. I’ll try to put the pillowcases on the pillows in a bit. I’ve obviously got the S-L-O-W-s today.
A nap with a cat sounds like a good idea. I wish I had a cat even more, now. I need to hear a soft motor running and feel a small warm body close to me.
W00t!
I thought that was from “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Forum.” I didn’t know anyone even remembered that that movie! LOL!
That was indeed, and I remember how hard I laughed at that movie when I saw it on a college campus. I was in a special summer program for high-school Juniors.
The one quote that still sticks with me:
Stand aside! I take LARGE steps.
There were a lot of lines in that movie that were way too subtle for a high-school junior to pick up on. It was a very funny movie! I’ve probably seen it three times, just because of the sight gags and one-liners
I dunno. I don’t want to oversell what was lost on me. But the sight gags and slapstick would have worked on anyone.
As the man said ...
“Something for everyone. A comedy tonight!”
Nothing for kings.
Nothing for crowns.
Something for liars, lovers, and clowns.
You’re right, of course. But that was back in the day when there was real comedy, not hatred thinly disguised as sarcasm.
And now, it’s time to take my sorry self to bed. I’m so tired I hate myself.
So, apparently some singer named Sia decided to direct a film whose main character is on the autism spectrum. Did didn’t cast an actress who is on the spectrum and, therefore, is facing calls to boycott any awards ceremony that might try to honor the film.
Makes me want to see a movie.
I hope you feel better soon! It can’t be winter forever, right?
Right?
Maybe this was the wrong time to start reading a book about exploration in Siberia.
I wonder.
What’s the COVID-19 rate in Siberia?
No idea, but in 1866, it was zero.
Lookie! Jake is in a time warp and went back to kittenhood naps!
Good morning.
So far, I’ve been busy, but I still have things to do before I head for Walmart. The pills are sorted and the shirts are ready to be folded, and all is well in Dullsville. Well, except for having to stop and catch my breath when I walk across the room.
The wind has been blowing for at least the last 24 hours and today promises to be overcast again. Unngh.
I checked out the stepping machines and it would appear they’re not too expensive, and don’t take up much of a footprint. Maybe a square foot or a little more. I think it would be good. I had an elliptical machine but I had nowhere to store it. It was collapsible when not in use, but I moved from a one bedroom into a studio and had no room to store it or set it up. This machine would be a lot better on both counts.
Now I need to go wash off my face and comb my head out, then fold the shirts and I’ll be ready to go to Walmart.
Today is library day, too, as well as drug day. There is a prescription waiting at Walgreen’s.
A solid wooden box, inverted, stationed near a handle or bar to make sure you keep your balance. Your son can easily fix it for you.
Good morning. I hope everything goes smoothly at Walmart. As soon as the sun comes up here, the brothers will be getting the trash bins out.
Drama Queen and the young man with good teeth moved this weekend. She borrowed the truck and brought it back. She even called Sunday night to ask if she could keep it until Monday, instead of just assuming.
That would be a good idea if I owned my own place and could put holes in the walls without having to pay for repairs. I’ll figure something out.
Thinking about the trip to Walmart makes me tired. But then I was tired before I even got out of bed. Same Ol’ Stuff.
Drama Queen? Acting like an adult? *swoon* Be still my heart!
And now, I’m outta here, in the quest of a new route that avoids hills at speed.
Your apartment should have supportive bars as a regular feature. It’s such a basic, low-cost way to help prevent falls for the elderly.
Good morning. Happy Tuesday!
I am not elderly. I am simply no longer historically challenged.
Only in the bathroom, in the tub area. And there, it’s overkill: one small vertical at the rear, a small vertical at the faucet end and a long one on the wall. There are adjustable bars that can be fitted over the outside edge of the tub, but this bathroom is so small, it would present a safety hazard, rather than a precaution.
No other bars in any other room.
