Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Is it Friday Eve already? Where did this week go?

Happy Friday Eve!

I hate to see kids sick, and age doesn’t matter. If they’re my kids, I hate it even worse because I’m so far away from them.

Maybe this is the equivalent to a middle-aged man wanting a fast car: the cat wants to eat more to prove he’s still young.

Well, it sounded good in my head, anyway. ;o]

I hope Shannon’s problem is only old age and cold joints. I admire veterinarians.

We’ve had the same vet since we moved here. He’s very good.

None of the kids at home is sick in any serious way. I texted Tom this morning, and he says he feels okay.

He said Shannon has lost a lot more weight. He’s going to do a blood workup and see if he can figure out why. “Hypothyroidism is one possibility, and that is treatable.

I remember that vet’s office. I still have some mementos of the open house they were having. I can’t recall why...new digs? Anyway, its a nice atmosphere.

I’m glad the human children are OK. How are the three young adults who have left home? Especially, Elen, USMC?

Elen was fine last I heard. It’s been a couple of weeks. The others are all okay too. Slow time of year. I think Tom and Anoreth start back to school next week.

Home from the vet. Jake was so afraid he was next that he threw up again.

Poor Jake. He was probably embarrassed about that, too.

I’m glad to hear the rest of the adult children are fine.

Wow. That’s strange news about Shannon’s weight loss, but a blood workup would be my choice, too. Strange, these older cats.

Now I have to leave for a bit, but I’ll be back!

I forgot to tell you, although in retrospect, I don’t know how I could have.

Last night, shortly after 1700, I was playing mahjong in the dark and couldn’t figure out why my joints were still on fire. Then it dawned on me: although I had made the tea and set it aside, and got the snack ready, I had not, in fact, taken my pills, which is why I always take the snack — so I have something to buffer the pills with.

THAT was not an experience I like, nor one I want to repeat. I hope i don’t do it too often.

Anyway, back from the appointment. It was cold in the wind, and cold in the office, but I had parked in the sun so the truck was warm when I got into it, and the ride home was fairly pleasant. Mission accomplished.

Oops. I’m glad your appointment went well, anyway.

Vlad is making cornbread again. It’s good for a young man to have a skill.

Kitteh should have been here about 30 minutes ago to see frogs in the alpine snow, heading for the water in glacial run-off pools. Series.

Good morning.

As a PS to my appointment, I asked if I needed to put a mask on, having it in my hand, and the interviewer said, “Nah. We’ll be six feet apart.” Nice! He’s a doctor, so...

How are you feeling this morning? And the rest of the family?

It IS good for a young man to have a skill. I taught mine to sew on buttons and mend minor rips as well as to cook simple meals, clean house and bake, though he never took to the latter. Cooking, yes. But he was on his own for a lot of years, and he was never shy about asking for help to learn something new, so making cornbread is an admirable accomplishment for a young man. I might get some made today as well!

I’m also going to try that Cuban dish that HK sent the link for a while back.

And now, I’m going to head for the shower.

It’s good to see you again, SG. I hope the Covid has passed you by, or at the least that you only had mild symptoms. Take care of you and yours!

DP just got his Covid test results. He’s positive, too. This is good: means that once we’re all over it, we can forget about it.
