A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Since I can’t do much else for people, I say a lot of prayers for them. :o])
Back from nap. My feet got cold.
When it comes to cold feet, I’m glad I have peripheral neuropathy, because I don’t know if my feet are cold or not.
I used to hate cold feet, so I’m very sorry yours get cold.
I also hope your nap was good, otherwise!
It was. No cat, though.
Here is DP with some groceries.
I’m going to take some groceries internally and then go to bed.
I hope everyone in your house feels better in the morning!
‘Night!
Vlad made brownies, and I almost believe I can smell it a bit. Could be my imagination, of course.
How will James get home?
Don’t tell me he got in the same care as two positive people.
Including the one he shares a bedroom with. We’re all gonna die!
Well, he’s more at risk now that he knows his brother is positive than he was before so now he has to ...
Wait - all this Democrat insanity is starting to impact my brain.
Nevermind.
Well, that’s not surprising to me. You’ve always taken great care of yourself, and your body responds to that care be healing quickly to all onslaughts, internal and external. You GO, Girl! :o])
Ah, yes...The morning GuardCat.
Good morning.
No phone call.
However, here’s something to start your day with Amazing.

Thank you!
Nice music. I don’t often listen to horns.
Ditto, me.
But Sharon posted this on FB and I listened. And I liked it!
And I shared it.
How are you feeling this morning?
Pretty much the same: a little snuffly, and no sense of smell. And cold.
Jake spewed.
None of the yutes has turned up yet. I’ll call them around 8:30, if they haven’t emerged on their own.
I didn’t want to get up this morning, but I have an appointment at 0930 so I’m just going to hang out because I don’t want to be stressed when I get there.
Jake has been spewing a lot, lately, hasn’t he?
I hope the yutes are feeling better today.
Frank is snuffly and says he has a headache. I gave him an ibuprofen, and he’s eating some oatmeal.
Yes, Jake has been spewing more than usual. Overeating is a factor! Shannon is going to the vet this morning for a vaccination and general overview. She’s been limping again recently; it’s probably the cold weather on her old joints.
