A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I was cold and needed to go to the bathroom, and as soon as I moved, the cats were all, “Let us out now!” Jake is back already, because it’s cold. I might wrap in some blankets on the sofa when I’m done my cup of coffee.
How are you today?
Thanks for asking, but I woke up cold. Maybe I’ll have some raspberry cocoa. It’s always a soother.
I was afraid you’d had some horrible dreams or been kicked out of bed for being there. I’m glad to know it’s nothing more serious that catz and cold.
No, nothing disastrous. I think I’ll get some extra blankets tonight, though, and make sure the windows are securely latched. Of course, if I do that, I may be too warm ;-).
Getting old, as my mother observes, is not for the weak.
Your mother is right. My mother never wanted to “get old,” so she died at 72. But I think she just gave up. She had been ill most of her life, gave birth to seven children,(no small feat when one is ill) and had a heart problem.
But yeah, your mother is spot on. With me, though, it’s a strong constitution and a weak mind. ;o]
I sometimes imagine that I’ll feel free to be totally bats when I’m old, after decades of self-censoring. Probably not, though. After all, what would I have to be bats about if I have my apartment near the church, the library, and a bar?
I’ve convinced myself that at my age, I no longer have to live by the constraints that were self-imposed 25 years ago and longer, and that’s liberating in a number of areas!
I agree.
It must be Nap Time with a cat. That means that later on today, you can have another! :o])
I have done a good deal of useful activity, including a card to you that I didn’t get done yesterday.
Now the yutes are getting up, reluctantly.
I managed to get a few things done, as well, but there are no Yutes to get up.
Now I have some other things to do. But they’re quiet things.
I brought the water in yesterday because I was almost out. This time, Walmart only had the 28-bottle cases instead of the 24 and even just those four extra added a lot more weight than I expected. But until such time as I move, I’ll have to keep buying water. There is definitely mold here, and I blame it for why I haven’t felt all that well since I moved in.
Happy Friday Eve, everyone. We has made it.
With those eyes that kitteh isn’t going to miss a THING.
Good morning, ArGee. It’s Thorsday here. I’m so cold.
It was 20 Fs when I put the puppy out this morning. She was quick to get her business done so she could come in and eat, so I didn’t suffer too much.
Good Happy Friday Eve Morning to you, ArGee.
No news is good news about puppy.
It’s not that cold here, but I feel it.
Kathleen and I are going over to a friend’s house later this morning. I’ll make sure I get the van warmed up, and then maybe my feet will stop aching.
Maybe you need to add leg warmers to your leggings. They’ve made a big difference in my legs and feet so far this winter. Amazon has a large variety of them. Mine, of course, are from my working days.
According to Sibley’s Guide to Birds, AR is smack dab in the middle of cardinal country, so I’ll have to make sure my binoculars are handy, once I get settled.
You’ll have to take some video of them on your phone. Bills in different regions have different songs.
I got that impression from the book. There were probably four different renderings of songs on the page. Interesting.
Yes, I'll send you some videos!
Back from a nice visit with friends, and Naptime has landed.
I’m right behind you.
I would have been gone almost an hour ago but for another glitch in my ordinary life.
See you tomorrow!
