A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

W000t!!
It’s always cold in here. The kitchen is warm, but here, there are wires and surge protectors along the baseboards, and I don’t know if the heat from the unit will damage them, so the space heater is on the other side of the room, keeping them temp more or less at 76° or lower. But it’s very chilly to me, because my normal body temperature is so low.
Besides, the thermostat is behind a bookcase, and I can’t see it to set it.
I hit “post” before I edited, thinking I was editing... or something. Not a good sign.
How are your feet feeling this morning? I hope they’ve recovered from being abused yesterday!
I don’t recall if you have a recipe for chickpea soup but I found this as I was looking for something else.

My feet feel better today. I’ve been sitting this morning! We’re about to leave for church. It’s not raining right now, but it’s very wet.
Sunny and cold here. I’ve been trying to figure out why I feel so awful and finally realized that it’s because I’m tired.
Around 0600, I was debating with myself about whether I wanted to go to church or not, and then the thought struck me: If I have to debate it, I probably shouldn’t try to go. That saves a lot of future debates.
We got back from church to find Tom. He needed to print a label to return his rental books.
Printers are indispensable. And so are printers.
Sorry. I just got off the phone with my Favorite Son and his wife and they sound excited about my move. Do I dare believe it? I mean, from Lingo Lover? The FS, that is very true. But perhaps this is a new Herself. New Year coming and all that, maybe it’s a new start!
*she sez, not holding her breath*
You can treat it as if she means it, because why not? Maybe sometimes she feels positively about it and other times she doesn’t.
Don't we all, at some time, about a lot of things? And I would do that anyway, because I'm always willing to forgive and to give people another chance. Again. As I mostly do, which is who "me" is.
Sweet little floof!
Good morning.
I realized when I was in the laundry room that next time I have to use the dryers, I’ll have to wash my coat. It’s stained on the collar from my skin. Unngh.
Someone else moved out, probably into assisted living or hospice, and there was a thick pile of Christmas cards, just waiting for me to pick up! After I bought four boxes at Dollar Tree...
It’s hard to believe the year is almost over with. It will be a relief in a lot of ways, for a lot of people. Although, I hate to see the direction the country will be headed in if the fraud is allowed. (But don’t get me started!)
I turned the light on in the bedroom to strip the bed and it made a strange noise and then flickered. I shut it off and turned one of the lamps on. When I got to the clubhouse, I wrote Chuck a note about it. He has three things to do here, now — change out the light bulbs in the bedroom and kitchen and replace the seal in the toilet so the water stops running. I guess if I complained about it it would get done a lot faster, but I have a tendency to say, “When you have time.” Wrong thing to say, I guess.
I do hope all the stuff gets fixed!
I have some errands to do today which will involve the Student Driver, if all goes as planned. He’ll be up in a couple of hours.
Tomorrow is his birthday. Since he’ll be working tomorrow, we’ll celebrate today.
It be Monday. Happy Monday. I need to self-identify as a minority and quick as NY is looking to prioritize minorities in getting COVID because ... woke.
On the plus side, the puppy made it past 13 days without a seizure this morning so maybe good things are happening. That’s a record.
Congratulations on the better-puppy-health!
Could you identify as a woman? Transformers are immunity-compromised or oppressed or something.
I figure Patrick will be in the “frontline worker” group, as a Walmart stocker, while Tom will be in the “non-frontline but essential” group, as a cook.
As for me, we’ll probably be looking at the next bubonic plague pandemic before my number comes up for a Covid vaccine. However, every successful vaccination, no matter who gets it, breaks a potential chain of transmission, so it’s all good somehow.
The only pressing thing I have to do today is go to Walmart.
Saturday, I had to put a trace on the package I sent to my Favorite Daughter and The Guy, because after 11 days, it hasn’t been delivered.
Yesterday, I made one phone call to the shuttle service, and the other will be made today, to AR. I will continue to call for the next three days, and then over the weekend will begin to compose a letter. Again. This time, there will have been 16 calls again. I shouldn’t have had to mess with it, but there it is.
I hope 2021 is a better all around for everyone!
Happy Monday!
Good news about puppy health things, and here’s hoping it continues.
FR draws almost as much power usage as FB does on this laptop. Obviously, if I surf one, I have to shut the other off. I don’t like it, but that’s how it goes, sometimes. I don’t know of any way around it.
Many items of mail are delayed this year. We didn’t even have a delivery on Saturday. Maybe the order from Dover will come today, along with the Priority Mail envelope containing all the children’s Christmas cards from Grandmama. She keeps emailing me to say the tracking shows that it’s “in Charlotte.”
I couldn’t identify as a woman without setting womanking back several evolutionary steps.
