A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I’ll be working at camp all day tomorrow. Archery Merit Badge. The weather-guessers say partly cloudy and a high of 51, which is pretty decent for December 19.
I can’t remember the last time L watched someone else put up a door.
If the snow doesn’t need to be removed, this apartment management team will NOT pay to remove it.
Stopped by the very small, very locally-owned and operated chili-hotdog shop on the way home. (Two chili-dogs later, was fed.) Offered to replace her bathroom doors when home chores were done.
Hmm.If you bartered it, could you eat that many chili dogs in a year?

Jacob peered over the crest of the ice ridge to view the facility below.
The temperature was rapidly dropping as the feeble sun of this world dipped below the horizon.
An incoming snow squall would mask him, possibly, as he approached what was the least worst avenue of entry.
“Growf” he mumbled.
Indeed, it was.
“I suppose that ‘foom’ comes next?” the simulated Soames occupying his armor joked.
“Not quite so...distasteful. But yes.” Jacob replied.
Rabbitoid/Pooka profanity and mannerisms was an entire world unto itself.
Twenty-four carrot entertainment.
A “very good” question!
“I’s king o’ da hillz!”
Good morning.
I got a text around 2130 last night and I tried for the next 90 minutes to go back to sleep, but finally gave it up as a bad job.
So almost two hours ago, I took a nap. I don’t know that I feel much better but at least my eyes don’t feel like two burn holes in a blanket.
Gosh, all the texts.
I’m about to go get dressed for a day outdoors. I need to leave a little after 7:00.
These contained photos of James as a very short person, so I was happy to get them. He’s really the only grandson I’ve had that I’ve been able to spend any time with, (there are three more) so texts with photos are good.
More envirothon?
Archery Merit Badge. The guys do the tech stuff, like making a bowstring, and I run the range. I’ll have to recertify in the spring if I want to work summer camps.
I don’t think I had the hand/eye coordination to do archery.
I always wanted to but there wasn’t much of it where I grew up. The closest I got to it was “Boy’s Life.”
I’m home. All the Scouts succeeded. My feet hurt.
Good for all the Scouts!
Let’s face it: Your feet are getting older.
I found some Things To Do yesterday that I hadn’t planned on, and it may or may not have contributed to the move. One thing is for sure. It kept my mind off how tired I was. I finally gave up completely and was asleep at 1500, and only woke up because I was cold, and that was at 0135.
So another day and it’s a day of rest, which I will do from the mind out.
Good morning. My everything is getting older! It’s raining here.
A littermate of yesterday's kitten.
And only eight posts separate the two...
Good morning!
The shower has been had again. Slow going that. But between a new, moisturizing shampoo, and some hair vitamins, the curl is coming back in my hair, so that even though I lost some in the shower this morning again, what is still on my head is curling. If “she” had layered it as I asked, it would be curlier still.
I’m hoping to go to Church today so I can see the children’s program, but if not, then it’s only a couple of weeks before I can go at 0900 every week. I always look forward to the two years I can go with my Ward, to the 0900 and the 1030 services. The noon and 1330 are impossible for me.
Now that my hair is shorter, I really need a blow dryer to make it look like I have more hair than I actually do. I may have to start wearing the wigs redhead gave me, otherwise. :o[
I made tea before I went to bed yesterday, thinking I’d drink it when I woke up for a pit stop, but I couldn’t wake up enough to go into the kitchen. That was about two hours into sleep. I never woke up again until 0135. So another six-plus hours solid. I needed it.
Good morning again! I’ll have a shower later. The cats are upset about the rain.
It’s not as cold in here as some previous mornings, which is nice.
