Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

“Me and my shadow!”

Good morning.

Rain is expected today and somehow, I’m not surprised. I’m addressing Christmas cards. Finally. I don’t have many, but I don’t know that I’ll buy any more for this year. All of what I have are left over from other years. Thankfully, it takes a few years for paper to disintegrate.

So what fun activities are planned for the Tax-chick household today? More Driving Adventures?

Choir at 9:00. Tom in the afternoon. Dinner at Taqueria La Unica to celebrate DP’s 58th birthday.

Could be a driving adventure. DP actually took a turn yesterday. Pat’s work schedule isn’t on the calendar, the goofball. According to Vlad, Pat spent the afternoon playing with Google translate and doing stuff like reading Wikipedia in Maori. He is so weird.

Happy Birthday DP!!

The Guy’s birthday was yesterday, and I forgot to get a card for him. It’s not surprising because I had no clue when his birthday was until a month ago. However, I sent a Christmas package earlier in the week and it has a couple of things in there for him, so maybe he’ll forgive me. It will be delivered today.

Reading Wikipedia in Maori. Sounds sublimely Pat-ish.

The package I ordered for you has shipped. If nothing changes, it will arrive Wednesday.

I have one in the making for you but whether it gets there in time for Christmas will depend on how much I have left in my stamps.com account. *eeep*

About a third of the cards are addressed, but while I was gathering addresses out of the Rol-O-Dex (yes, I have one!) I weeded out those folks I either had no more contact with or were deceased. The latter took up quite a handful. :o[

When it gets late enough, I’ll see if I can go round up some quarters. I should have done it yesterday but just didn’t feel up to it. I have to do it today, regardless.

I’m back from a writing project. Some of my committee-people will review it later this afternoon. When DP gets back from running, we might go look for an office chair for Tom’s Christmas present.

That short little errand I was on wore me out completely.

Then I finally got to a stage in printing where I absolutely, positively had to replace the black ink cartridge. I’ve been waiting for it to run out and it’s been almost two weeks since I got the first message about it.

We’ve got rain, and most likely, snow on the mountain.

And snow in my brain. Like on a TV...

Time is flying. It’s about to be dark here. Drama Queen and the nice young man have arrived, and we’re waiting for Tom so we can go out to dinner for DP’s birthday.

In my meeting at 4:00, I learned that the husband of a church friend has died, so I’m sending a card.

I’m so sorry about the death of your church friend’s husband.

I iz on my guard! You not take my kitteh!

Good morning.

Did DP enjoy his birthday?

We had rain and very dark skies in the morning, but sunny and very windy in the afternoon, yesterday. I was worn out, but managed to sleep 10 hours again. I suspect I’ll keep doing it until such time as I get readjusted.

I’ve packed more than I thought I have and gotten rid of twice as much as I figured. So the only thing that’s holding me back is focus and fatigue. I’ll get it done, though.

Today, I’ll finish the Christmas cards so I can mail them on the way to Walmart in the morning.

Good morning. Kitteh needs a security object this morning.

Good luck on all your efforts today!

DP’s birthday went very well. Lots of cake and songs.

All but two of the cards are addressed, and while I’m in between stuff, I’ll stamp them and put on return address stickers. I bought the cards at Dollar Tree a few years ago and the box is missing two envelopes. I ended up rummaging in my leftover stash of cards for all occasions.

The Easter cards and those meant specifically for priests will be forwarded to someone who may find a use for them.

Anyway, that’s the extent of my work today, except for perhaps doing the dishes. I’m exhausted. Par for the course. :o|

We’ve had cats who like soup.

I hope you’re all having a placido domingo. We had another successful music performance, and for my next thing, I’m going to sit out in the front yard and draw trees or something.

Strange Sunday, here. Very cold, cloudy, and oddly different.

But still, no cats to nap with.

The Late great PV liked peaches and green pepper, the former was strange because cats can’t taste sugar.

It must have had something in it he liked. Chemistry!

It’s warm here. 74 in the house, not sure about outside, but it must be 60s.

Maybe it was citric acid, present in both items, I believe. He was my cat, but my Favorite Son slept with him every night. I don’t like cat-hair sheets, but somehow, it seems, PV never lost much.

He was the smartest cat I’ve ever seen, but we kept a bell on him in case he got out. It paid off at least twice! The funny side of that was that if he heard a bell that sounded like his, he began calling for another cat! Silly thing.

And now, my exhausted self insists on dragging me down the hall.

See you tomorrow!
